Where do all of you guys get those nifty sticks that people keep using in their films? Do you just make them or what?

I think Ryan says he buys them at a hardware store. Surely Home Depot has them. I get mine from Michaels, they are just wooden sticks. I need to upgrade.

Do you mean dowel rods? Wooden ones can be picked up right at Lowes or Home Depot as Zurita-Films said. Some sites now carry carbon-fiber ones that are much stronger but much more expensive. A wooden dowel costs around $2 max for a 40" 3/4 diameter one.

I hope you mean the blade instead of the whole saber itself. Becuase if you mean the whole saber......

Mine are forged from a non-terrestrial ore, in the fires of Mt Vesuvius by the God Vulcan himself. Only cost me my father's right arm (or was it his left?). I highly recommend them.

yea i'm talking about the things you just edit over. So you just get a wooden stick and attach it to the pvc? glue or what? sorry i'm new at this, me and my bro have been using broomstick handles and old shower rods, not so bad, just a bit heavy and all

I think (I've never actually built a lightsaber), that you should use a screw (I think I read that somewhere...).

I think you need to be reading the stickies and checking out the Costuming and Props forum.

There's been loooots of threads on lightsaber blade materials. General consensus here:

    1) Bamboo and wooden dowels are best if you're on a budget.

    2) Aluminum (usually 3/4") is generally thought to be best for a moderately larger expense.

    3) Carbon fiber tubing is thought to be the highest-quality and lightest, but it's the most expensive.

Yeah, you screw through the dowel and lightsaber handle pretty tightly.

xpoc, won't the screws cause the dowel rod to split? i mean, it's so thin. and also, what are you suggesting using for the handle?

I've been using dowel rods for years, and the only time they've broken was when they were hit too hard, and it was never anywhere near where they were screwed in. The cheapest option for a hilt would be to use plumbing supplies. The Big Yellow Box has some good cheap designs, but some of them will have to be altered if you're going to be sticking a blade in them.

I have had trouble finding aluminum over 3' long in the hardware stores by me (Michigan). I'm not sure where others get them, but I still need to try placing an order from onlinemetals.com, I'm just being cheap at the moment.

    I love this drawing.

It's pretty much what i do. For my kids' first shot...i just stuffed papertowels in the handle to steady it up and it stayed in place really well. I wouldn't suggest this for any type of a real project, but worked for a "quick fix" b/c i knew they wouldn't swing things too hard.

You can also you a flash light for the handle...(thats my plan anyway)..ofr course you will have to modify it..but its the correct shape and stuff.

    Glad the drawing helped.

    I used to use bamboo.

I use golf club shafts now. Graphite! oh ya.

Very light and strong. I make custom hilts out of pvc pipe and screw the golf club shafts into those.

    *raises hand*

Not for 'sabers, per se, but for sparring amongst friends. If it's good stuff it stays together pretty well, but I'd rather use aluminum for a saber, 'cause I like the added durability and weight.
