The 12 days of Christmas originated as an underground catechism for teaching Christian doctrine. When Parlimentoutlawed the practice of Catholicism in England, this song prung up as a way of preserving biblical truth (Protestant too!)

A Partridge in a pear tree=Christ on the cross (a partridge due to her protection of her young chicks)

2 Turtle doves= old and new testaments

3 French hens= faith, hope, and charity, The theological virtues

    4 calling birds=the 4 gospels

5 golden rings= the first 5 books of the OT.

    6 geese-a-laying= the 6 days of creation

7 swans a-swimming=the 7 gifts of the holy spirit

    8 maids a-milking=the 8 beatitudes

9 ladies dancing= the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit

    10 lords a-leaping= the 10 commandments

    11 pipers piping= the 11 faithful apostles

12 Drummers drumming= the 12 points of doctrine in the Apostle's creed.

*This all came from our school's paper. Did that answer the question tammy???? :)

Is that really how it originated? Where did the source come from? It's a neat idea, but many times, someone will just make that up and then people believe them. It could very well be true, but I'm always the skeptic about stuff like that.

Huh? I knew you had a third verse there. I just didn't know if y'all wanted to make up your own, or do the Twisted Christmas version.

Hey...that could be fun to make up our own!! We should do the Atlantic Canada Twelve Days of Christmas song!! Woohoo!

Starting today, we could write two songs at once! First put "the one thing of Christmas that such a joy to me" and fill that in, then underneath do "the one thing of Christmas that's such a pain to me" and fill that in. Then, after yours, repeat whatever has already been said!!! Hehe, that could be fun!

Ok, everyone pick a day. I'll take day seven, cause seven is my favorite number! :D
