Nice. Not exactly rocket science, but nice. The coffee cup size gag makes it worth it ;)

"Nice. Not exactly rocket science, but nice"

Why do people say this? Rocket science is actually pretty easy!

And the cloning is excellent. I look forward to an explanation/tutorial!

    >>Not exactly rocket science<<

Clearly. There were no rockets in that clip.

    >>Rocket science is pretty easy.<<

The orbital mechanics aren't too bad - unless you try to solve for anything but a two body/one body system. The most challenging part of rocket science is controlling and building the engines, as well as managing the fuel. I doubt this is ever easy. Not to mention the environmental issues of you're talking manned rocket science.

Anyhoo - Ryan does indeed look a little scruffier.

My challenge for the next set of cloners: Get your clones different outfits. At least Ryan here switched hands.

If I had such a well-paid job as Ryan I´d be able to do this too... I think... But Ryan, it would be cool if you´d just make a big-sequence with all your effects in one!

    great

WOAH!!!!!! A LUCASARTS MUG!!!!! THAT'S SOO COOL!

Oh. And the video's nice too. ;)

So...multiple takes with a person trying to move the dolly in as exact a movement as possible, or a virtual camera movement. Seriously, ever since Zap started using V-pans for everything it's getting harder and harder to tell.

Like the mug, and I think I like you better with facial hair!

    How's work?

    -Matt

(All I need to do is steal an Amblin cap from Spielberg and everyone on the board will envy me... :D)

Heh, actually, this is something new. I personally have never seen a dolly camera move incorperating clones before this one. Be sure not to confuse it with digital panning or a manual camera pan ;).

Oh yeah and, good job Ryan 8-}.

Nothing that hasn't been done before

I beg to differ. While this clip may not be in-your-face impressive, I hadn't yet seen an actual camera dolly in a clone shot. The camera moving through space is very different from the old panning and motion tracking or just digital panning.

If I had such a well-paid job as Ryan I´d be able to do this too... I think...

Actually, this clip cost me nothing to make.

As you all probably guessed, the key is simply to get the camera to move along the same path multiple times at as much the same speed as possible. Then in AE, line them up time-wise and then mask it off like usual, but animated. My solution was good old Legos. (my folks were up visiting yesterday and I had them bring up a storage box of old legos) Specifically, an old monorail system was what I was looking for. I built the track and the car to support my GL-1 (I had to get a little creative here... I'll take some pictures in a bit) and connected pieces on either end that will send the morail back the opposite direction so it would just go back and forth while filming. There were a lot of small problems that I had to work out in relation to the monorail moving, but in the end I got similar enough camera moves that I could do a little rotoscoping here and there to finesse it into looking good. (I didn't even have to stabilize the shot before comping them together; how you see it is how smooth/rocky the shots are)

But anyway, this was a proof of concept to me that with realitvely simple (read inexpensive) camera-moving systems, you could get moving shots that are similar enough to be composited together pretty seamlessly. Because physically moving your camera is cooler than panning. :D

I'll take some pics of my little monorail set up a bit later.

PS: Work is wonderful. I've been having a great time, building a lot of skills and have worked on a couple of non-in-game but game-related projects, and will soon hopefully get to actually do some in-game effects work for a project in development.

...what do you mean? You've never seen clone tests where the camera moved?

EDIT: Ryan, in my camera motion clone shot, the camera is all over the place...not just panning.
