Anakin and Tahiri's are kind of ugly; I think Jacen and Jaina's are pretty cool, actually.

To me, it looks like Anakin is wearing long tan socks with black loafers. Ew, bad style, Solo boy. Your dad taught you badly. :p

As a sidenote, those pictures have made me realize that I need to buy the rest of the YJK series and reread the ones I do have.

I own the Crocs version of those Mary Janes.

On another thought, the shoes that Anakin's wearing reminds me of the ones pilgrims used to wear...

I always thought Anakin was just wearing black shoes with either web leggings or anklets web strapped over them (World War II Allied uniform stuff). Anyway, they look a lot better than those stupid puttees Luke Skywalker was wearing.

When it comes to Anakin’s shoes I keep on thinking them as that kind of shoes used by kung-fu users, even if they look a bit to shiny for that

I think that the cloaks and flowing robes are actually supposed to be a visual sign of affluence. Consider, for example, Victorian England, where women's gowns contained dozens of yards of fabric draped in elaborate folds and creases. Those dresses were anything but cheap! Or, since Star Wars draws heavily on Asian culture, particularly that of Japan, look to the woman's kimono. Again, literally dozens of yards of expensive fabric--silk! Do you know how hot silk is? They must have been near faint from heat stroke! No wonder they walked so carefully in their geta sandals! lol

This excess of fabric symbolizing wealth, and in particular, the kimono-style, for example, is exemplified by Princess Leia's outfit in A New Hope. Translation: Lots of fabric, lots of money.

As far as shoulder pads go, the ones on Xixor obviously are meant to intimidate, and this is not unique, either. Again, let's look to Japanese culture, from which Master Lucas drew so much inspiration (especially for Darth Vader! Just compare helmets--even the mask looks similar!). Samurai outfits were designed to intimidate, and while wearing armor would be uncomfortable and not very fashionable, is it any wonder that someone like Xixor, who brings a whole new meaning to filthy rich, would have his fashions designed to intimidate, yet be comfortable?

Fashion, though, is cyclical, and it seems we're in the era of where less is more, so it is no surprise to see that reflected in Star Wars, and I, for one, appreciate the more adult themes because it gives it a more realistic feel. I think it is very clear from Oola's outfit just what is going on in Jabba's throne room, and if he wouldn't have been worried about an R rating for his movie, I'm sure Master Lucas would have had her wearing even less!

And lets not forget the outfits of Ann and Tann Gella in Phantom Menace!

It seems the term "Twi'lek" is synonymous with porn these days on the internet, so it doesn't surprise me that some artists choose to bring a LITTLE more (NOT porn) adult themes to their favorite universe by having women bare their midriff, or wear tight pants, etc. Personally, I would love to see what an artist like Luis Royo could do with Twi'lek women in his art because in my opinion, there is no better artist around for fantasy artwork. Well, maybe Monte Michael Moore, but that's it.

What is nice, though, is that unlike Star Blech (Trek), Star Wars isn't nice and clean, a place where everyone is happy, and blah, blah, blah...gag me with a spoon already. It is gritty, it is alive and breathing, and because of this freedom, it is a living thing, constantly evolving. This is why Star Blech recently underwent a reboot...where do you go after killing the Borg queen? There's nothing left to explore!

Since we're discussing fashion, does anyone have any idea what the Twi'leks call their head band? Preferably the Ryl name? And what is it's cultural and social significance? I'm assuming it's like a bra, and since males almost never wear one, it has to be inferred that women who don't are acting a little risque as almost all twi'lek women wear them. I'm researching this for a bit of fan fiction and need to know.

I'm betting that the sash/cape combo is supposed to suggest a Roman toga, garb of the senators. I like the idea that Bail Organa puts on a serious and sharp business suit for every day wear and dons the toga over it for senatorial dress.

My favorite thing about the 70s/80s comics is how they saw a movie full of people in vests, tunics, robes, Nazi uniforms, baggy coveralls, and dresses -- all costumes heavily influenced by the real-world western fashion of the past hundred years -- and were like, "I bet this is a future where everyone ELSE wears spaceman spandex jumpsuits!"
