I don't think I've ever been to a ballet. But I think I rather go to a ballet than an opera.

Really I should do both since I'm all about live events.

Actually, operas are not that bad. They actually usually have more action than ballets, with more interesting plots, and more interesting set changes, etc. although ballet bodies are better. It's just like a subtitled movie - there are subtitles above the stage so if you don't know Italian, you still know what is happening.
I love ballet. But if I could only watch ballet or opera for my entire life, opera.

    OH NO!

but I thought all males in ballet were straight...they get to hang out with scantily-clad women all day long...really...fit...women...

ummmm they meant the women. because my aunt goes to ballets. and the old men thing came from my uncle going to operas with his fifth wife and mistresses

Good for you. I think that the average person would prefer opera more still, because more action, easier to follow, etc.

I would choose opera as well.

Mostly because I adore the costumes and musical and theatrical performances.

Secondly because I sing dramatic and lyric coloratura, whereas I can't dance to save my life. :p

    Edit: Adding:
I do love ballet as well, but the above is why I would choose opera.

I would guess ballet had more action and opera would be more standing around while singing

I think the difference between ballet and opera is similar to the difference between a novel and a poem. Even if they are about the same thing, one approach is more direct and "generally entertaining".

I practice upwards of 2 hours to "shriek".

It is nearly impossible for average singers to reach an F6.

And one song calls for a A#6.
Most people's heads would probably implode at singing that note :p

Don't get me started on "skill".
