Some background on Remembrance Day (British):

11th of November is used to commemorate the armistice that resulted to an end to the horrors of WW1. It is on the 11th, because the day that the armistice was negotiated, they decided there would be peace at 11am the next day.

But, there was a very unfortunate turn, there were allied attacks planned for 7am, some were cancelled, others weren't. In the space of 4 hours, 11,000 men died, for absolutely nothing.

Many people were left scarred and psychologically damaged after the war. There was a club, known as the British Legion (soon a large organisation), which was made up of war veterans and other servicemen. They made it their job to help those who had suffered because of WW1.

On much of the western front, the only flower that grew after the war was the poppy. The British Legion took it as a symbol of rebirth, and new beginnings.

    Yay for history! :D

Do you specialise in a "type"? Or have a favourite subject (or a few!)?
I'm by no means a historian but I like Eastern, ancient civilisations (especially languages and art), and the UK, Italy, and France up until the 1960s or so.

tests AV on some English History:

who was known as "the wisest fool in Christendom" and why was he known as such?

When Elizabeth 1st was dying, what was she sucking, and how many hours did she stand motionless?

in what year was the magna carta signed?

the black death came from Asia and spread across Europe by rats on a cargo ship carrying what?

who said "whowill rid me of this troublesome priest?" and who was this person referring to?
