Unfamiliar with his work. Hopefully he knows how to film in real deserts.

So this all makes sense now:
    Episode III - Wookies
    Episode VI - Ewoks
    Episoxe IX - Raptors

Some of the things I've heard about JW really makes it sound shallow, but on the other hand a fourth Jurassic movie does not have as much potential as the ST. Once the first Jurassic Park was made, there wasn't really anything new to do with the franchise.

RJ is definitely the most interesting of the three for me.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter who they announced, people would be upset.
I haven't seen anything he's done, so I have no opinion, but I've heard good things about characterization in Safety Not Guaranteed.

I love how internet message boards turn everyone into clairvoyant film experts.

The same head-scratching and outcries were present back when Irvin Kershner was announced for Empire, and Richard Marquand was announced for Jedi.
Their previous work gave no indication that they were up to the challenge, but we all know how that turned out.
Sure there are more popular choices, but let's hold off on the pitchforks for a bit, mmkay?

I must say I am thrilled with the choice. I really liked Jurassic World. Rian Johnson is a great choice for the second act and Trevorrow has the chops to pull off a grand finale. If he can resurrect the Jurassic franchise, which had become quite the turd, that gives me hope.

So he was only chosen because his movie made lots of money, not for any skill in directing? Real good dose of confidence there.

There's a touch of knee-jerk "director of the moment" going on here that doesn't sit well with me. Abrams, Johnson, Trank, Trevorrow, Miller & Lord and Edwards all fit that profile. Still, at least its not Justin Lin...

I haven't seen either film he has directed, so I can't say anything negative or positive. So far, though, I've been pleased with Lucasfilm's choice of directors for each of their SW films.

But those guys didn't come off of making the most successful movie in the last 5 years.

It's perfectly natural for people to question the choice, especially considering his credits don't seem to justify it in an artistic sense.

I don't know, man... I wanted Jim Jarmusch or Sophia Copolla for this.

It certainly looks like they've gone with the "safe choice" for Episode IX.

All my hope's for this trilogy are with Rian Johnson and Episode VIII...

Not entirely sure how that would be a bad thing, but okay.

Ya, I'm a little confused at the hostility to him (not even going to bother trying to say his last name lol). Let's all just take a deep breath guys and think this through before raging - why shouldn't he get a chance? :)

He seems to be a decent director, looking at his IMDB ratings, but its not someone Im excited about seeing what he does with Star Wars.

Will have to watch this Safety Not Guaranteed to make a final decision about this guy. Wont watch JW. Besides, we could go through several directors before they're ready to film the last ep. Happens all the time. And for all I know this guy could shine with a great script.

Something I haven't seen confirmed yet - is Rian Johnson still writing the script?

I wouldn't go that far. JJ, although his films have proved divisive, has been showing he's a competent director for over 10 years now and Johnson's known more for his indie "style" of film-making. But I agree with you on the other directors. Although I DO feel Trevorrow could surprise us.

Personally I was hoping for Brad Bird to close out the trilogy.

I don't think he's bad. I mean, JJ Abrams is BAAAAADDDDDD! Truly a dreadful director....

Trevorrow is just "safe" I think. That probably isn't a bad thing though when it comes to turning in the third Installment...

If Rian can come up with something really original and surprising for Episode VIII then all Trevrrow has to do with Episode IX is wrap things up with a decent finale.

Then we'll just have to try and forget the ghastly Abrams and his movie.:p
