Well, I would like to know what that stuff is, though. If it's there, I ticket that they are useful things, which won't be a bad thing........just make the size smaller.

They are IM links. If you have an IM profile listed (for example, your AIM handle) clicking on the small link will open an IM window with you. Esentially the same the IM links currently located on your profile do, but with a beautiful confirmation window that lets you add the identity to your contact list and some other options depending on the IM application (for example, the Skype link lets you leave voicemail). Nothing essential.

I don't have a lot of crap in my signature either, and agree that the IM icons are obnoxious.

 

In my opinion, which is the most important, the IM icons are just superfluous. The same info is in the profile, and we've all left that blank for years.

Having a handy icon that you can click on to hit on the girlz would be a handy feature for me, but I don't think with the OMG PRIVACY vibe and OMG DONT TALK TO GIRLZ that the media and our Harassment Policy is trying to avoid really works with that.

I can see the argument..."so and so is harassing me!" "but she had her IM info right there!" mods have to get involved to mediate off site stuff...same old same old. I'd say just leave ALL that info out, of everywhere. If people want to exchange it it should be in PMs, or in their Profile space.

It's still going to take me a long time to get used to. I really hate having cutesy icons for things like 'edit' and 'reply' instead of just good old fashioned text links. In general, I don't like the way any other message boards besides these look, though. So I'm going to be impossible to please.

Generally, I'd be in favour of as little 'clutter' as possible - even if said 'clutter' it does 'purport' to 'make our e-lives easier by providing great new functionality'.
