I am back from the dead. Errr.... Well, back from my lurker-mode, at any rate. I blame writer's block.

Well, I've actually had the first (and thus far, only) chapter of this story gathering dust on the shelf of FF.net for quite some time, but never bothered to post it here. Now that I'm mostly done with the second chapter (which is taking forever to write, unfortunately.) I have deided to post it here, to see what y'al think. Hope you enjoy it! :)

A/N: Well, I'll just say this: I have been watching waaaay to many mystery diagnosis/diagnosis X shows.

    ---------------------------------------------

Obi-Wan winced as he put a hand to his head. A sharp pain laced through his skull as he knelt to meditate. But, as quick as lightning, the pain left again. The teenager sighed. Perhaps it was the change in weather affecting him. Dismissing the very brief headache, Obi-Wan closed his eyes in meditation.

But, little did the padawan know, that this was not going to be the last bout of seemingly random headaches.

    One week later...

As the stars twinkled brightly over Coruscant, the Jedi temple was quiet and at peace. And in the Jinn/Kenobi residence, master and apprentice were silently devoting their evening to their respective duties. But, with timely accuracy, Obi-Wan rose from his place on the couch with a yawn, switching off the data-pad he had been studying with a flick of his fingers. He stretched briefly, and sleepily shuffled over to his master.

?G'night, Master.? He said, his voice a tad hoarse. He leaned over awkwardly to hug his master, who was still seated in a lounge chair. Qui-Gon chuckled, and returned the embrace, patting Obi-Wan firmly on the back.

?Goodnight, young one. Get a good night's rest.? He said, himself looking not too far from sleep.

?Yed, Mader...? Obi-Wan spoke through a yawn. As he quietly strolled into his room, Qui-Gon's deep, melodious laugh carried after him. It brought a smile to Obi-Wan's face. With yet another yawn, this one a bit deeper than those before, Obi-Wan changed into his sleep clothes, and removed his boots. Ah, how good the carpet felt on his feet! His window was open, and the coolness of the night had seeped into his room, leaving a pleasant, dewy feeling on the thick carpet. He took a deep breath with closed eyes. Night had a feeling all its own. Peaceful, serene, and, Obi-Wan considered, almost magical. Silently, he made his way toward his window.

Surprisingly, only a few lights could be seen from this point ? probably because his window faced a particular part of the Coruscant horizon that was largely occupied by industrial buildings, which did not use as much outward-aimed light as some of the buildings. All the same, Obi-Wan knelt by the window, under the spell of the cool night breeze. It was so peaceful. So perfect. The perfect time for meditation, he thought. Dazedly he closed his eyes and reached out for the Force.

Sudden, bright, fiery pain lashed through his head. Whips of mental fire licked at his brain and lightning struck at his skull. Obi-Wan's eyes snapped open, a grimace shooting across his shocked features. Quickly, he snapped his shields up. No need for Qui-Gon to worry about him. He waited for a few moments with nothing but silence around him. When Qui-Gon did not come into the room, or contact him otherwise, Obi-Wan let out a breath that he hadn't been aware that he'd been holding.

What in the name of the Force was that? Obi-Wan was coiling from the pain. Whatever it was, he didn't want to experience it again. He touched his forehead gingerly, remembering the time, now about a week past, when he had experienced a similar headache. But that had not been anywhere near this scale. It still begged the question ? what was that?

Before the padawan had time to come to any conclusion, something else happened. With only a brief warning, images began to flash across his eyes. Obi-Wan suddenly found himself watching two figures in the training salle ? himself and his master.

    ?Focus, padawan. You've

 You truly are a master of writing angst! Poor Obi-Wan :(. I agree with dimyavie. Though, it will be hard for Qui-Gon not to know after his padawan fainted in class.

    ---------------------------

In a daze, Qui-Gon quickly walked beside the hovering stretcher, in which his unconscious padawan lay, tubes and wires running to and from his body. An oxygen mask covered Obi-Wan?s mouth and nose, and there was a plastic tube stuck into his arm, providing him with medicine-rich liquids.

?What happened?? Qui-Gon?s normally calm voice was now anything but ? worried, forceful, and urgent.

Cynthia Jet-Lora, one of the head healers of the Jedi temple, answered in a rush.

?We don?t know. According to Master Alvarez, they were meditating, and he wouldn?t come out of the trance.? She fiddled with the equipment attached to Obi-Wan, and shouted out some orders to other healers standing by, who ran ahead to the healers? wing; where they were headed.

    ?Symptoms?? Qui-Gon inquired.

Cynthia sighed. ?He?s unconscious, as is obvious. He isn?t taking in much oxygen, his reflexes aren?t working properly, and he?s running a high fever ? his head is on fire. His body is using up his energy doubly as fast as is normal for a human, and he?s verging on being severely dehydrated.?

Qui-Gon nodded slowly. Cynthia was very blunt, as he had expected. But he hadn?t expected such a long list! And they didn?t add up. None of the illnesses that Qui-Gon was familiar with had symptoms such as these. Worry built up in Qui-Gon like water building up against a dam ? it would break, sooner or later.

Suddenly, some alarm went off on the equipment. Cynthia murmured a light curse, and began belting out orders again as they reached the medical room.

?Qui-Gon,? she said firmly, ?You can?t come in - I can?t have you getting in the way. Stay out here.?

Before Qui-Gon could even think to protest, Cynthia, the other healers, and his padawan were all gone.

    ----------------

Obi-Wan bowed with his master to the council, and walked calmly out of the chambers. As they walked back to their quarters, Qui-Gon assessed their mission with Obi-Wan.

?As the council put rather briefly, we will leave for Fondor in two days, Padawan.?

?Yes, Master.? Obi-Wan replied. ?Though they didn't elaborate much.? This was a silent inquiry for his master to brief him on their assignment.

?You will want to pack minimal supplies; we will be traveling quite a bit.? Qui-Gon said easily, ?We will be escorting Keela Torez. She is an eye witness to a murder ? both the victim and the offender are -or were- of a high political status. Should tempers flare, the court and its judge wants her to be protected.?

?That?s where we come in, I take it?? Obi-Wan asked. Qui-Gon nodded.

?Yes. And the defendant, I'm told, isn't very fond of Jedi. We are taking all precautions to keep our presence in the court a secret.?

?Yes, Master.? Obi-Wan replied obediently as they rounded the corner into their quarters.

Quietly, the two prepared a small dinner for themselves, and conversed casually as the skies darkened over Coruscant, the stars and city lights twinkling. After cleaning the dishes, Obi-Wan bid his master good night, and let his head hit the pillow. Not long afterwards, he was sound asleep.

But when he woke, he wasn't in his room. Instead, he woke in a room filled with an air that smelled of chemicals and sterilizers, in a small bed whose back was inclined. And all around him were white walls; Those cursedly white walls of the healers wing. His weak hearing could faintly make out beeping and buzzing, and he noticed with a touch of alarm that there was an IV tube running from his right wrist, and his nose and mouth were covered in a respirator mask.

Dear Force, what had he done this time?

Obi-Wan dared to nudge his head toward the chrono that he knew would be on the left of his bed. That was odd. Quite early in the morning to be in the healers. Though, he supposed, if he had been outcold overnight... Ooh, his head hurt enough as it was. Trying to figure out what traumatic e

Well, at least Obi-Wan isn't suffering at the moment. Though I do hope that the healers can find out what's wrong. And Cynthia's right: Qui-Gon should really get some rest...Poor things :(. I wish I could just hug them both! Please add me to your PM list! [face_batting]
