    This just in: The gaffer for Episode VII will be Joseph Schmoe.
    We can rest easy folks. Based on his previous work, I can tell you that he will gaffer the **** out of this movie.

    I disagree. Sorry I think his previous work sucks and this will ruin the entire movie for me. I am no longer excited for the ST and I've lost faith in humanity.

    Redefined? Please... He's a middling gaffer at best and that's putting it nicely. I won't back up my statements with any evidence but just trust me this is worst decision LFL/Disney could make. Such an uninspiring choice! [face_not_talking]

    Darth Chiznuk : I guess we just have really different views on what makes a good gaffer. But at least go back and watch some pre-Schmoe gaffing and tell me that things haven't changed drastically for the better since then. It was like gaffing dark ages back then. Disney recognizes that.

    Yeah, but his original gaffing had a huge cultural impact. People probably won't appreciate it today. Their expectations will just be too high for any gaffing to live up to.

    Disney has their head up their @**! Pre-Schmoe gaffing? Um, that is the Golden Age of gaffing!!! You and Scoundrel were clearly not around for that so you just don't understand!!!! :mad: But you're definitely right that nothing has been the same since and that is the sad part of this discussion.

    This is obviously a generational issue. Those who grew up with Schmoe gaffing will love it. Others just won't be able to appreciate it.

    This is actually pretty important. People forget that the original Star Wars was pretty much made in the edit. The first cut of the movie was pretty damn poor. It was slow and ponderous. The energetic pace of Star Wars came from a drastic recut. One of the interesting things about the prequels, especially Menace, is that they seemed to move quite slower and I do sometimes feel that one of the problems with the prequels (which I like incidentally) is that they didn't have someone like Marcia Lucas, who was instrumental on the OT, in the editing room to inject energy into the films.

    The editor for the new Star Wars is going to need to do more than just use wipes and iris transitions. If the goal is to recapture the feel of the original films then editing is going to play one of the most important roles. So while we may joke about this not being big news, for me it most definitely is.

    It's OK, you can admit you're new to the subtleties of gaffing. It may just be subjective, but IMO Pro Scoundrel and I simply have better taste.
