Confusion

Hey folks. Let me clear up some confusion.

1) I quit my full-time snowball/ign job in December 01. I have no plans to come back.

2) They pay me an hourly consulting fee to add features to boards/vnboards.ign.com at their request

3) I have full access to the code. That hasn't changed.

4) 90% of the "title" code was completed when I was still employed. It took me 10 minutes to complete yesterday and I figured I might as well sneak it in as an added bonus for the 2/3 IGN admins/managers who wanted it -- as a side effect, theforce.net admins get it too.

5) When IGN management requests sticky threads -- I?ll be happy to add it in.

Whether or not admins/managers should even use titles on this system is not up to me. I'm sorry it created such a huge controversy.

No, it wouldn't be practical, unfortunately. Only managers and above can add titles, and we have 65,000 odd people on the boards, so we'd be completely overwhelmed just trying to add the titles, to say nothing of updating them as needed. Therefore, we're restricting them to the JC/FF moderators, FF CRs, VIPS, and game/competition winners.

This will be a tool, not a toy. We've agreed that those people with colours will only use them to describe their role on the boards, eg "JC Literature moderator, Boston City Rep, Star Wars author", and so on.

Anyway, while it is technically now possible for regular members to be given titles, it isn't practically possible. That would take dozens of hours just to get everyone's requests up... then what if you change your mind?

It would be an administrative nightmare to do.

The 'titles' will be used in an official capacity only, if at all, to designate what role someone who has 'super-user' status (by that I mean anyone who is not a regular user - VIP, Moderator, Manager, Administrator) has on the forums, be that an author, the City Rep for Boston, or the Moderator for the Senate Floor.

This will not be a toy. There will be no personal titles, only official ones that these people have anyway, but which have been relegated to Signatures and Bios previously.

Thank you very much, zero. I know that any additions you make to the boards you're pretty much doing as a hobby, so I completely understand your position.

Like cbjedi and Padme Bra said, don't blame yourself for the controversy (what we call "Internet Drama" around here ). It's just a fact of life on these boards, so we've gotten quite used to it.
