I've read it once or twice, really liked it, but didn't love it. But when people talk of Watchmen it's named one of the greatest works not only of comics but of literature in general. What am I missing? Will a third reading perhaps change my mind?

It was the work that really made people look at comics as a actual work of literature (Even though Eisner's "A Covenant with God" was early then it). The fact that it simply works so well in it's form, and cannot really be translated well to any other form media, and the fact that you can read it hundreds of times and find more things. Like the pirate story. At first glance it doesn't seem connected to anything, but on subsequent reading you can find the parallels in the story, most notably Ozymandias's saga. You can argue about who was right and wrong, what the morals of the story are, or if there are any morals. Hell the page where Rosache removes his mask is worth hours of discussion alone.

Now I'm not saying it's the best, but these are arguments for it.
