Cool possible link between Episode I and VI

I'm sure someone has noticed this one at some point out there, but I haven't seen anyone mention it. If you're watching the movies in order, starting with Phantom Menace, you see...

Anakin, at the end of the podrace, getting his pod tangled with Sebulba's, then using it to somehow cause Sebulba to crash.

About 36 years later, in Return of the Jedi, you see...

Luke, at the end of the speeder bike chase, getting his speeder tangled with a Biker Scout's. You might think, aha, Luke is using the same trick his father used. But then of course, it doesn't work, and Luke is forced to leap off the speeder and use his lightsaber to finish the job instead.

When I saw Phantom Menace, I definitely thought it was odd how Lucas chose to end the podrace. Now, after seeing Jedi last night, I'm wondering if that was intended as a set up-pay off.

Then again, who knows? I'm also certain I can hear someone screaming "Son of Suns" in both of those movies as well. So maybe it's me.

 

Cool observation...I don't recall anyone else bringing this one up.

It certainly wouldn't be the first instance of this occuring in the saga.

Lucas has reused plenty of things from the OT. This is just another one of them.

 

TPM practically is ROTJ.

Lightsaber battle, space battle, ground battle.

Luke vs Vader, Battle of Endor, Ewoks fighting Stromtroopers.

Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon vs Maul, Battle of Naboo, Gungans fighting droids.

 

Both Episode's 1 and 6 had a similar style at the end with three different things occurring - space battle/ground battle/lightsaber fight.

 

Not only does Lucas do this, many film makers do that kind of thing in their films. I can't ecall anything right now though.

Its pretty cool though huh?

 

You're right, I just remembered that the endings to The Godfather parts 1 & 3 and they were done in a similar style.

Lots of stuff is supposed to be mirrored in the PT.

For instance Anakin being whinny in AOTC, who was whinny and wanted to go to Toshi Station and pick up some power converters and wouldn't be such a bad pilot himself in ANH?

AT-AT in the second film. AT-TE in the second film.

Jango Fett appears in the second. Boba appears in the second, though daddy had a bigger role.

Not to mention the asteroid chase.

In ROTS the space battle. In ROTJ there's a space battle though one is at the beginning the other at the end.

 

The saga has been described as a "symphony" with similar scenes and themes appearing and reappearing throughout. This is another really cool thing about Star Wars.

 

Funny that you use the word symphony...when John Williams was composing for the PT, to create Anakins Theme, he took Vaders Theme and reversed it. So its Vaders them being played backwards which gives it a forboding sound (from memory). Cool huh?

Yes, very cool. And here's another one: listen carefully to the celebration theme at the end of Episode I. It is a highly speeded up version of the Emperor's theme as first heard in ROTJ - and of course, Palpatine is right there with the group in the final scene.

 

I've also noticed a link between 3&6 both Luke and Anakin say:

"Don't underestimate my power."

Just thought I might bring that up.

 

To hear Lucas tell it, he probably had the end of the pod race with Anakin and Sebulba when he designed the speeder scene in 1980
