I have started building a light saber, (and found inspiration this morning for a second!) but I'm not trying to build a replica of any existing character's sabers. Is this wrong? Am I violating any costuming etiquette by not recreating an existing character?

Just curious, as I'm new to this. Thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't think so. I had a customized lightsaber for "Phantom Menace" and people seemed to dig it.

I would think building it yourself would trump anyones saying it doesn't look like a movie characters. It's your lightsaber, heh.

But also, most of the people you're dealing with wont be able to tell one lightsaber from the next. So it really doesn't matter.

Moral of the story: do what you want ;)

Nope, you are perfectly fine with that. If you want more advice on sabering, check out out costuming and props board on here. The thread I linked you to has all of the main topics listed on it, a bunch on sabers.

Thank you all for the advice and encouragement. When I get a few finished, I'll share some pics.

I have a feeling this could become an enjoyable and time-consuming hobby.
