PT Could We Haved Avoided the PT With a Flashback?

Not quite. Most of that is true, but during the story meetings for ROTJ, Lucas laid out a good deal of what happened when Anakin became Vader, the Jedi Purge, the duel and the birth of Anakin's children. A lot of the backstory was set up there. Read those transcripts and you can see many similarities to what was in ROTS. Additional material was added with TPM and AOTC, mostly since there were other ideas initially, but Lucas opted to focus more on Anakin and less on the origins of the Republic, the Jedi and Sith.

 

Why would it need to be avoided?

Who said any large actors would have been cast. There could have been flashbacks added when Lucas did the special editions.

It's hilarious how they have to have flashbacks to explain why nothing is as you would expect it to be in Episode 7, rather than just continuing 7 from where we would expect things had gone after 6, with the Empire defeated, Luke passing on what he learned, Han and Leia together, children not estranged, etc. But then they couldn't do a quasi reboot of Episode 4, which is what the suits apparently demanded. So no, flashbacks are a bad idea. You only need them when you're not planning on telling the whole story, and just need to explain what you left out.

I think either could work. Even with the PT the backstories do not make complete sense.
