Isn't there a kind of flashback in ROTS when you hear the sandpeople in the scene where Palpatine is talking to Anakin on Grievous' ship?

    Yeah that's kind of cheesy.

Still, JJ put Leonard Nimoy in the new Star Treks, he's a fan pleaser. I hope he doesn't take it too far.

The whole thing could be a flashback . . . within a flashback!

They should use flashbakcs. And the movie should start like this:

No thank you. The opening scroll and holo-recordings are the closest we should ever come to a flashback.

Nah, not really. More of a callback than a flashback. Could even be something Anakin is hearing in his mind, maybe even through the Force (not so different from Yoda seemingly hearing Qui-Gon's "No Anakin no!" in Attack of the Clones or Luke hearing Obi-Wan's "Use the Force, Luke" in A New Hope).

Flashback to the entirety of Empire Strikes Back plus a two minute ending where Grampa Luke tells the grandkids it's time to go to bed now that story time is over. Abrams would officially have made the "best Star Wars movie since Empire!"

I remember smiling in cinema after hearing that. It's such a smart little peace, one of many inside jokes Lucas likes to give us.

There's a LOT of ways that Episodes 7 8 and 9 could be screwed up, and a flashback or timeskip or anything like that would be among them, however my attitude is not nearly as draconian in terms of these spin-off films. I wouldn't mind a more experimental/non-traditional approach to those movies.

Essentially I think 7 8 and 9 should stick with tradition but as far as any non-episodic movie goes, the more weird stuff the better.

Meh, if it serves the story, I'd be fine with it. It would be something new and unexpected.

    Yeah, that's right. I'm a rebel.

I took some screenwriting classes and love to write. The first thing they told us was to not include flashbacks in your scripts as a beginner as it is to difficult to pull off even as a pro.

That being said I don't mind flashbacks done correctly but even at the highest level of writing they fail which is why so many people think flashbacks suck.

For me you can include flashbacks, forwardbacks, sidebacks, I don't give a crap as long as you keep me emotionally invested. Watch the movie MEMENTO if you want to see true genius. That movie will lose you real quick but emotionally you can't stop watching. If they can do that as they did in TESB I don't care what they do.

That was considered an "inside joke"? I always thought it was just an audio cue to remind the audience. Huh. The humor went right over my head (and still does, apparently.)

Well, I consider it to be inside joke.
Like an X-wing and Tie fighter in AOTC.

To me, it's different from the X-Wing & TIE Fighter. Those are there only as a kind of "Let's see if anybody notices this!" moment. But the Tusken Raider sound in ROTS was pretty hard NOT to notice, and it actually served a narrative purpose.
(not that it matters at all-- I don't mean to sound like I'm getting on your case for thinking of it as an inside joke, I was just surprised since I'd never seen it that way.)

"Hey guys, remember that time Anakin went all dark and slaughtered an entire village, including the women and children, when his mother died after being kidnapped and tortured for a month? Awkward, right? Boy was that a knee-slapper!" - George Lucas, ROTS

I really hope there are no flashbacks. Really. This is a huge style continuity thing with me-much like the screen wipes and the opening crawl: gotta have 'em!!

I SUPPOSE I could live with it, if there's only like one or two SHORT flashbacks, but not if it keeps jumping back and forth like LOTR or a Chris Nolan movie...

I didn't mind the whole tusken raider sound in ROTS, because it was so off in the distance, it was almost inaudible and was not really a "flashback," as the definition goes. It could be interpreted multiple ways, as far as what it was...

    No flashbacks please!! [face_shame_on_you]
