ST "Couple of things" in TFA designed as lead-ins for VIII

Abrams says that Rian Johnson asked him for a couple of things that he needs for his story.

When you see The Force Awakens 4x like I have, you start to look for these. What were those couple (or more) of things that Abrams gave over to Johnson as lead-ins?

Here are some of my speculated thoughts:

-King Prana/Ducane - could one of these be Toro's role? (I know there is a separate thread about King Prana)
-The story of Luke's lightsaber getting to Maz
-Maz acknowledging that she knows the Force, but she's no Jedi
-Rey's rebellion doll/helmet

Flashback/vision probably contain several:
-Watching Kylo Ren kill that character in the KoR scene: what happened here?
"Rey"/"These are your first steps" - Obi-Wan
-Luke saying good-bye to R2D2

Any more you guys can think of?

 

-Rey's Force Vision.
-Rey's backstory being so ambiguous.
-The way that the last scene with Luke was shot.
-The shots of Kylo and the KOR.
-How Maz got ahold of the Bespin saber.
-Etc.

Basically I think that most of it probably relates to Luke and Rey (because Rian has plans for them).

 

R2 tagging along to Luke's planet with Chewie and Rey. Is there any real need for him to be there as far as the plot to TFA is concerned?

Sure he had the map but surely they'd just upload it to the falcon's navicom?

I wonder if RJ wanted him there for some reason to do with his script.

I reckon the story of Luke's lightsaber getting to Maz will be relegated to a book or comic.

 

Or perhaps Luke and Rey run into her in the next film (since I believe that Lupita's return has been confirmed).

 

i'm thinking that perhaps one of the biggest is Finn's condition at the end of the movie. My guess is that is something RJ specifically requested... Finn still in a coma.

 

Perhaps. Given Rian's previous work, I could see the fallout from that being a big subplot going forward. However, I could also see that as simply being JJ's way of allowing him and Rey to separate for awhile without making either of them look bad.

Or both could be true.

 

• How the Falcon got stolen.
• How and When Han and Leia parted ways.
• Was Leia pregnant with Rey when Han left and was Rey kept secret from him.
• Is Luke visiting Jedi Temples.

 

It's going to be very challenging to execute that but I'm not ruling it out. I think it's less likely out of all the Rey parentage scenarios.

 

I personally like the possibility of Rey Jinn. Complexity is intriguing. Just a personal "Point of View".

 

That might be even tougher. I think she's a descendant of Kenobi and/or Luke.

 

If nothing else I bet R2 will be there so he can fire a lightsaber out of his head when Luke needs one to fight off the First Order once they arrive on his planet.

 

I really like the Kenobi Idea.

Also look at from the angle of if she is Luke's daughter then Rey and Kylo both are descendants of Skywalker lineage but from different parents.

It then becomes a family conflict which has never been explored in the new canonical universe and could therefore be played out on screen.

 

Has it been confirmed? If so, great news. I loved Maz

 

I believe that it was confirmed by KK herself at the London premiere awhile back.

 

I was thinking the same thing.

 

Maybe Leia knew if Han had known about Rey then Kylo could scan his thoughts and memories (seems to be one of his stronger Force powers) then that would endanger Rey and the future of the Jedi potentials.

 

Surely, the the history of the falcon being stolen over and over was put in to allow for random action sequences in the future.

Too much exposition? Here comes some randomer trying to steal back the falcon. Quick 5 minutes of action.

 

Or it'll go the way of how Han won the MF from Lando, and be consigned to the realm of a comic book and/or anthology film. Because it's not that important. It's only important if one of the thugs that Rey mentioned ends up being a Jabba-like massively powerful crime lord or something.

 

Ok stupid question time... R2 was with the Resistance, in low power mode. So... I'm going to assume that Luke did NOT take his X-wing to that planet because he'd need R2 / an astromech droid to use the X-wing. What ship did Luke take to get there?

 

The imperial shuttle he commandeered at the Battle of Endor. I'm sure it won't be but in my own mind I've always thought he could have just kept that and made it his own starship.

 

As to the OP --

• everything in Rey's flashbacks
• an established friendship between Finn and Poe
• the groupings of the characters at film's end (R2, Chewie, Rey, Luke --- Poe, Finn, BB8, Leia, 3PO)
• Ren's desire to possess the Skywalker blade
• Maz's knowledge of Rey's connection to Luke
• the rivalry between Ren and Hux

 

Can BB8 roll up stairs?

 

If he can't, he can at least use his grapple guns to get to the top like Batman.

 

After all this time, Luke probably has a much more cool, exotic ship — a hot rod of sorts. Surely a fighter pilot doesn't use the interstellar equivalent of a 30-year-old van/limousine for his personal vehicle.

Nevertheless, if Luke makes his Episode VIII debut walking down the ramp of one of those things, I may squee audibly.
