Hah! I'd independently come up with the same idea that the deaths of the Ones, possibly the last Celestials in the physical realm, might have something to do with the curious surge in Old One activity in the OT era.

Wonder if they are watching events going on and waiting out the Big 3, so that they die and that they can conquer the galaxy that much easily.

By "Big 3" do you mean Luke, Han, and Leia, or the Ones?

And speaking of the Ones, interesting how the Son, a Celestial, somehow became a god of wickedness rivaling the Old Ones, no?

If Abeloth does try to bring them back, she may not be able to control them. I can easily imagine her having to say something like this:

The idea of a Star Wars equivalent of the Holy Grail being the story's MacGuffin was also an idea I had. I see it as without a doubt the most powerful Force artifact, but it can only be used once every hundred thousand years or so. It was last used during the Cosmic War and only just reactivates after Abeloth's defeat, which is sensed by pretty much every Force user in the Galaxy. The Old Ones getting this thing would be really, really bad, like the Galaxy turning into Marvel's Cancer Universe bad, and then everything's all trippy and by the end Realspace and Hyperspace and Otherspace and even that afterlife are running together so we get cameos by beloved dead characters. At the end the good guys get the Holy Grail thing, which can, among other things, fully revive the dead, and after some debate amongst them they decide to use it on Mara.

The Jedi want it restore the damage to the galaxy, The Lost Tribe want to bring about their Empire, the One Sith want to bring about their Empire, some opportunistic Imperial wants to bring the Empire back to prominence, someone wants to end Force users forever, etc.
    This would be fun.

Also, I think that Zeta Magnus from Skyewalkers: A Clone Wars Story, should somehow be involved in all this.

I could see Abeloth resorting to freeing the Old Ones if she could not win, but it would not be her first choice. Now she is bereft of an avatar (though I argue Daala is one), it seems likely she would turn to them.

Off topic slightly, but Daala being an Abeloth avatar- oh man, that just makes too much sense! I'm actually one of the few who really like the character, but now that interpretation is going to be stuck in my head. Very tempted to even do a re-read of the books she's in to pinpoint when she could have become Abelothed, and to re-read her segments with that interpretation in mind.

The only other explanation is that Luke and the rest of the Jedi have debilitating brain damage for the rest of FOTJ.

I dunno about that. The treaty with Bastion was two decades ago by the time she reappears.

But! Abeloth was about to place mind tricks on pamphlets. What if she influenced Daala but didn’t even let her know? All these waves of Imperials listening to her, for decades, yet all she did was lose spectacularly against the NR and Jedi. It explains some of that.

It also explains her shifts in personality. Abeloth had likely done severe harm to her. The longer she was away from the Maw, Daala seemed to calm down. But when Abeloth escapes, Daala’s mind becomes more unhinged.

    It’s a curious pattern.

It's repairing itself, and the intelligence behind the Guardian of Forever is still active. Even the story says that Our Heroes only saw a small portion of what was there. The few parts of the city that were damaged should be good as new before long. The Rakata aren't the only ones from the Cosmic War era that have self-repairing technology, it seems. The Alashan tech actually seems to be even more advanced, as it can maintain itself in near-mint condition for tens of thousands of years. Keeper's World did the same, too.

Arhul almost certainly had to have known about the Alashan city from when fellow Alliance historians/archeologists decided to check it out to see if there was anything there they could use against the Empire. Lucky for him that he wasn't actually part of the team that did go to explore it. The Alliance likely never returned, realizing that Forever was better left alone, and they probably just hoped that the minor damage they caused would suffice to deny it to the Empire, too.

What makes me wonder is if the Empire ever returned- the only living Imperials were
    Grau and Anarine
, and given Alashan's location just outside of Imperial space in an empty, remote corner of the Galaxy, they may have just assumed that something had befallen their Cruiser and never really been able to follow up on what happened to it.

But then shouldn't have some of the older Jedi at Maw Shelter have fallen under her influence? As it is, only the kids/teens (younger than Anakin Solo), fell under her sway, save for Ben.

A bit more on The Cosmic War, from the early EU. There's too many references to this event for mere coincidence to account for- these were all meant to be the same epic, ancient war. This Cosmic War was also meant to be an important bit of backstory of the GFFA. The great part of them all is that they mesh perfectly with later EU, and presumably should be the focus of Supernatural Encounters.

    Marvel #84: [IMG]

    World of Fire: [IMG]
    The Night Beast:
And best of all, Keeper's World:

    ...THESE CAN'T ALL BE COINCIDENTAL.

    A few more notes:
    1. There is at least some dim awareness of the ancient Cosmic War amongst the greater Galaxy, or at least those who have an Academy-level education (Han), and Leia, known to have been highly educated on Alderaan. Even when their natural aptitude for languages is factored in, the symbols on Seoul V and on Alashan are both able to be deciphered at least well enough to be of use. The Imperial scout that Han got his map from was able to make even better progress.
    2. That the war mentioned in the sources is indeed the same one in all of them is suggested by a look at the very similar levels of spaceship technology found in the ancient recordings on Keeper's World and of the Masassi inhabitants, despite those planets being nowhere near each other: [IMG] [IMG] ...this rocketship tech is also too familiar to that seen in the 4th Precept, in an identical situation involving an ancient exodus from a threatened world: [IMG] ... a world that is likely ancient Coruscant/Notron. Right above, on the same page, we see a volcano going off, which is a known sign of Abeloth activity. We also know that Abeloth is familiar with Coruscant from a previous "visit", from the presence of Ophidians as mentioned above, and her identification with the ancient Notron diety Onrai. Plus, there is the visual similarity between the image from 4th Precept and a more modern Coruscant:[IMG] ...right down to the Moons and circular cityscapes visible from orbit.
    3. If we are all to put together a big story/unified story on this Cosmic War, it wouldn't hurt to map out on a Galaxy Map the various locations of things we know to be associated with the Cosmic War. It is remarkable that Alashan, Seol V, and Keeper's World are NOT within Imperial Space, but that some of Seoul V's "outpost Worlds" did host Imperial Garrisons.
    4. The same type of "Guardian" was left behind both on "Massassi" and on Alashan: [IMG] [IMG] A Guardian that, in both cases, is completely immune to the weapons of 0BBY, and is visually identical. It's the same exact type of Guardian in both cases. The Night Beast is the same creation as the Guardian of Forever!

Wookieepedia suggests that the Guardian of Forever Sentinel is an energy being that happens to be reptilian only in shape - as well as being able to change size and teleporting:

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sentinel_(creature)

The Night Beast seems less malicious, less powerful - and was able to leave the planet in a transport:

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kalgrath

The Sentinel also lacks the webbed hands of the Night Beast.

We are talking a hundred millennia.

    Variations would exist... perhaps?

Wookieepedia can suggest whatever it likes. Somebody typing something on there doesn't make it so. The Guardian is clearly not an energy being to anybody who reads the story. It is indeed a physical being much the same as the Night Beast. It is controlled by Forever itself, which can teleport it around the city.

As for Kalgrath being less outright malicious, well- he isn't being controlled by what is suggested by the end of World of Fire to be the original, evil inhabitants of Alashan. "Kalgrath" wasn't originally a mutated Masassi warrior, either. The backstory of him and the Yavin ruins was only later changed into a legacy of the Sith.

One might think so, though that does assume that there haven't been multiple Cosmic Wars from 100,000 BBY to the later Celestial/Rakata conflict. Originally though there was just the one big Cosmic War, per all of the Marvel references. The ceaseless war raging from Rim to Rim, similar ship technology levels, nearly identical Guardians being left behind, hieroglyphs that are still translatable millennia later, Abeloth hints, the Ophidians, multiple planetary exoduses, etc. One would think that there would be more variations than there actually are, unless of course they really are all connected.

Which author's comics were the first to use the phrase, "Cosmic War"?

Roy Richardson's Marvel 84: Seoul Searching was in March 1984, at least.

The others seem to use "devastating war" and "ceaseless war" instead of Cosmic War.

Could have sworn that I found a page on the Wook, a couple months ago about this but can't find it now.
