I think the first confirmation(aside from the ice caps) was in 2002. The next was 2008 with the Phoenix lander. And now this says 2%? N-ice.

Which is more: The number of times Voyager has left the solar system or the number of times water has been found on Mars?

At least when some transhumanist makes their weird high-flown post about "leaving the shores" there will actually be one part of it that is sort of remotely understandable.

That first bottle of water will likely cost more like $50 - $100 billion.

Does this mean we'll get a sequel to John Carter that doesn't cost trillions of dollars to make?

inorite, the sense of wonder is soooooooo lame. We should stick to making money, sex, and then dying.

Well, I guess for me, I feel like there's plenty of wonder in the world as it actually is. Watching a cheetah run down a gazelle or baboons make threat displays at one is amazing for me. There's enough richness and curiosity born out of the moment in its own right that I don't need to extrapolate beyond that. What I dislike about the space exploration stuff is that people so often build atop it with grandiose statements about how its the dawning of human destiny or the birth of the intergalactic empire or whatever. Aren't the things themselves enough?

I think the incomprehensible vastness upon vastness of the Universe dwarfs any human attempts to commodify/colonize it so badly that, at this point you have to kind of say "Why not?" What else are human beings doing in the "big" sense?

Yeah, and all you have to do to get it is heat the soil to the temperature of molten glass, and then remove the highly toxic perchlorate
from it, which Martian dirt is apparently saturated with.

No one here has anything against wonder and amazement at nature or the universe. Wocky and I (and others) don't like the idea that it's some grandiose adventure of warp drives and space colonies and bad science that you and VLM (and now sons_of_failure) are always going on about.
