In some senses it is politically icky, but a good deal of it is a kind of elitism. I mean, we have scientists now searching the sky for active Dyson Spheres and the like.

We also have "scientists" in nairobi researching if magnets have any correlation to gay marriage.

It's not like terrible scientists with misplaced priorities are only limited to the third world. Plenty of them in the US and Japan.

Please tell me you aren't seriously under the impression that only the United States and Japan contribute to the scientific community.

It's funny that folks go on about bad science that I have never posted. One post about warp drive being slightly less implausable and OMG SASQUATCH SCIENCE! So serious. Take some pills.

These are always my favorite threads in the JCC. Ramza and Vivec are the Statler and Waldorf of JCC science threads.

Goddamn kids these days with them telescopes! Back in my day we sat around and navel gazed and WE LIKED IT. It's those young whipersnappers who had the gall to look up at the sky and wonder what was up there that shot our civilization to hell! Couldn't they read the "Look, don't touch" sign?

Me, I'm just hoping to see the day when all JCCers can properly distinguish between "it's" and "its".

The highlighted part is the only thing I really object to. There are plenty of reasons to be hugely excited about astronomy, astrophysics, and space exploration. There are some great arguments for dumping significant resources into it (in terms of money and manpower both). But "something from outer space could destroy us" is certainly not one of them, to my mind. If you mean asteroids, then developing a comprehensive early warning system or even a missile defense of some kind (such as our current level of technology allows) really isn't that difficult, and represents a minority of what is actually going on in these fields.

If on the other hand you meant evil space aliens. . .I'm not going to pretend to be something other than dismissive of that notion. This is what I'm trying to say. Can't we just talk about liking or justifying some real world policy without having to resort to some crazy flight of fancy? Can we not treat Independence Day like its some prescient look into our future?

Thank you so much. [face_laugh] I needed that.

As far as water on Mars, there are ****ing ice caps up there, people. What do you think they're made of, beer?

...although that would be kind of awesome.

Well to be fair, a better summary of that article would be "warp drive being slightly the same degree of impossible".

    They're made of . . . dry ice.

    They're made of CO2.

I know. So is a good percentage of the Martian atmosphere.

...but this is a YJCC thread, it's a Friday afternoon and I wanted to snark and talk about beer.
