My 4 yr old and I were wathcing ROTJ last night. When the 2nd Death Star appears, I pointed out to him that they were building a new one, and it was still missing some pieces. He replied,

"No Daddy, all that missing parts is from when Luke blew it up in another episode"

    Cute

I think I thought the same until I was about 6. By that time I'd watched the ROTJ enought times to figure it out.

Me and my brother and cousins all thought the same thing as kids :p
In fact, even some older people who don't follow closely at all think that!
In a variation of this famous misconception, I was talking about SW to someone who was only vaguely familiar with the films, and he saw the second DS and he stated, 'Wait, isn't that the one in the first one, because they weren't through with it yet?' For someone who's only vaguely familiar with the stories, I thought that was a unique, and logical assumption :)

seriously..why do we all think that the second death star is the one from ep. 4?!

i guess this really comes to show that when we are little we don't pay any attention to the dialogue..no wonder ep. II was boring to so many kids

I think I always knew it was a second Death Star, but when I was watching the ROTJ DVD with my little brother who is 10 y/o he thought that it was the remainings of the first Death Star... I had to explain then...

A little cousin of mine just saw ROTJ. She thought DSII looked like a skull, and that it was going to come down to Endor and eat all the ewoks.

"Like a bad pac-man," she said.

seriously..why do we all think that the second death star is the one from ep. 4?!

Because it's a logical assumption for a child who's very visually oriented. In ANH, you see a Death Star blow up. In RotJ, you see a very similar object, but it looks like half of it was blown up.
If they pay attention to enough dialogue, it could seem like they're trying to repair it, not build a new one.

There's such a thing as a good pac-man? They're ravenous destroyers, all of them!

Yeah, when I was a kid I thought the DS2 was being built out of old Death Star debris which is why it looked so incomplete. Kids don't really pay attention to dialogue. They just sit back and watch things blow up. :)

I was much worse - I didn't even notice the construction, and somehow completely missed the point of the first scene in the movie. Here I thought the thing was finished and just built to look junked and ragged. :p

ROTJ came out when I was six, and I thought the same thing at the time. I think it probably doesn't hurt that when you're that little you can't read the opening scroll either. What else are you supposed to think?
