afaik the victims had their clitoral hoods intact, so i think we can rule out "time-travelling OZK" as a suspect

Well you did ask the question! [face_laugh]

Personally I find it a pretty far-fetched that you'd be able to find a reliable DNA sample from an item that was at a murder scene 124 years ago, but I'm willing to examine the evidence before writing it off.

Dr Jari Louhelainen is the scientist who examined the shawl. Looks like he's got a pretty good record of work.

    http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/PBS/116512.htm

Will be fascinating to see whether this does prove credible or not.

Incidentally I once went to a meeting at Mitre Square where Catherine Eddowes was murdered and saw the plaque commemorating the spot.

This was in 2000 and even then with all the development that had gone on it still seemed like a dark, drafty, sad place.

and yet instead of trying to publish his findings in a reputable, peer-reviewed science journal, he went for the exact opposite: the daily mail

I think it was the author Russel Edwards, that went to the Mail rather than Dr Louhelainen.

I suppose Edwards went to Dr Louhelainen with the shawl and got him to test it and make a report on a private basis?

Will be fascinating to see whether he does submit his research to be peer reviewed. As he doesn't own the Shawl (Russel Edwards own's it I think) I'm not sure whether he could do that or not, but I'd like to see it.

At the very least it would be nice to see other independent forensic scientist's working for the Met verify the sample- Technically they could seize the shawl as containing possible evidence relating to a still "live" murder case...

As far as I recall, Kosminski has always been the favored suspect among the Scotland Yard detectives who worked on the case. The guy had some very serious mental health issues, lived in the area, and I seem to recall him having a few other run ins with the law. It wouldn't be too difficult to put someone like him at the scene of the crime.

As for this "evidence", the paper outlining the methodology has yet to be released and yet to be reviewed by peers. It could be a giant crock for all we know, we'll just have to wait and see.
