Ugh, no- surely he'd host until death? I assumed it would be the case.

A greater shame given how bad The Nightly Show has mostly been. At least we still have Colbert coming.

I'd think that Sam Bee & Jason Jones might dual anchor as a possible replacement- they seemed to be tailor groomed for that role over the past several years.

I don't find mock anger very appealing, when it comes from either him or Ed Schultz. Anyone can stand around and yell exaggeratedly into a camera.

Oddly enough for me, I had just last week thought to myself that Stewart is in mid-career mode right now, like Carson in the late 1970s. A lot behind him, a lot still ahead. I'm sure that's still true, but apparently it won't be with the Daily Show.

I wonder if he plans to try and legit go into politics. Worked for Al Franken.

Saw this coming, the guy has looked listless since the start of this year. Or maybe even since Colbert got the Late Show deal. Still a shame, but seeing the Daily Show in the state it's in now is also not ideal.

Shame. He is one of the leading news sources for Americans.

I've been watching Jon Stewart since I moved to this country. His show has been a regular part of my day for over a decade. My world is now devastated.

Thanks for the Nooooooooo button, CaptainRegor. Just what I needed in a crisis like this. :(

There's nothing to say... even more of an end of an era. Now there'll be no watchable news programmes at all.

Although, FWIW, I really do enjoy the Nightly Show.

If you ignore the fact it's got Russell Brand rambling or approach it from the perspective of curiousity, like watching monkeys ******* in a cage, sure.

It's going to be tough to stomach the next presidential election without a working Daily Show/Colbert Report to serve as antacid.

This is what I'm most worried about. John Oliver once a week is not going to cut it once things really start to ramp up in... I dunno, two months, tops.

Erm. He was mildly funny, but I don't see where the show was that deeply insightful or anything. It's just comedy.

kind of a joke in itself that one of the more credible news sources in the US is a satirical news show on comedy central

    actually, it's a bit sad

Stewart has always insisted it's "fake news" and many take it as a good news source, but I don't think it's either of those things. Outside of some correspondent pieces, TDS rarely does its own journalism. They lift clips from television news (as does John Oliver, though he seems to rely more on serious Frontline and AJA pieces). That's not bad because it's primarily a platform from which to point out and criticize the absurdity of news media and politics. Sometimes I hear about stories that have been buried from TDS or its (spiritual) spinoffs, but it's not a viable alternative to the major news media organizations.

i think when jon stewart, john oliver, and across the pond, russell brand get out of their depth, they've always got the "i'm just a comedian" card

While that's true, I've rarely seen them resort to that card. I maybe recall seeing Jon use it once several years ago.

Stewart had a hard time acknowledging himself as Media Watchdog Lite. Partly because he was as coopted by the system as the mainstream journalists - the system being the broad fuzzy boundaries of media and entertainment conglomerates with their news subsidiaries and the way advertising dollars have a way of undermining serious critical journalism aimed at those advertisers.
