    Book 2

The voice of Jamma could clearly be heard just down the hall, to the right, behind a closed door. As the Jedi advanced closer to the door, Qui-Gon carefully put his exhausted padawan down. Obi-Wan, now sat in a half erect position. His head lulled back and forth against the wall while his sleep continued.

A low groan escaped Obi?s lips and was quickly stopped by a gentle hand of the mighty giant of a master. He held his calloused marked hand over his apprentice?s mouth until the moan subsided.

Qui-Gon unclipped his apprentice?s saber and laid it by his side. Not that he thought Obi would wake up, but just in case for protection and also it would hinder his fighting to have it clipped to his belt. He returned to his upright position and led the three to the door.

Xanatos, a padawan not yet a master but equally trained as well as one. He knew what his job entailed and he was just as prepared as Qui-Gon or Yoda to do it. Yoda looked to his padawan to see his preparedness and a sense of pride rushed the little master before he could put it back in his mind.

Becoming like Qui-Gon I am. Pride, an emotion not used by Jedi, yet pride I have for this new padawan. My former apprentice trained him well he did. Proud of both I am.

Master Jinn checked once again to see if his two companions were ready, they were. He was in the lead and planned to stay that way. Worry for his former master and former apprentice made him stand his ground and insist on taking the lead. He pushed the door open and the battle began without a word or warning.

Jamma, shocked by the attack almost fell from the chair he sat on. He didn?t carry a weapon but chose instead to rely on his guards, who were equally thrown off by the sudden flurry of Jedi that rushed them.

Some of them had no weapons and the few that did, made the regrettable mistake of not pulling them quick enough. They misjudged the Jedi?s ability to escape.

The Jedi's ability of forced quickened speed, backed with the tenacity in which they attacked, caused at least five of Jamma?s guards to be cut down.

Master Jinn was more than pleasantly surprised at Xani?s abilities, still remembered from when he trained him. A couple of the moves Jinn taught Xani were his own and he recognized them.

Xani was indeed powerful with a saber. Within two minutes he had put down two enormous Hutts who must have planned to smother the apprentice to death for they still fumbled with their blasters as they launched their attack on Xani.

Xanatos could not help but see his former master look at him and he tipped a salute with his saber to his forehead before lowering it and stabbing another guard through the heart.

Yoda wasn?t exactly having a difficult time. He successfully put down two guards and seemed to have a little kick to his speed. He was much faster in a battle than he was when he walked languidly down the halls of the Jedi temple.

Qui-Gon couldn?t help but think the older master had two speeds, turtle pace and lightning fast.

Even while in battle, Qui-Gon had time to smile at his thoughts as he lunged forward, parried his saber outward, jumped over the guard, and put his saber through his opponent's back.

Qui-Gon never felt joy in killing, but their freedom came before these men who the Jedi had hoped to negotiate with. Now it was them or the Jedi. They fought for their very lives.

Not likely. We should have known you can?t negotiate with a Hutt, but Yoda would say that is being prejudicial. Maybe next time we can be a little more careful before trying to reason with a Hutt.

    ############

Jamma, along with one of the captain?s of the guard started to make their exist. The bodyguard of sorts was not a Hutt. He was of some half humanoid who stood about as tall as Xanatos. He had a drawn sword in one hand and a blaster gun in the other. They managed to sneak out into the hall; the same hall where Obi-Wan

It was decided by Master Yoda that Jamma and his little gang of cronies would be escorted back to Coruscant for the Republic senate to deal with them. Any negotiations could be done there for Yoda said he had finished with the band of crooks.

Pats on the back was numerous and handed out freely on board the Jedi ship as they returned home.

Xanatos felt a little lost. Some part of him down within, the part that use to be him wanted Obi-Wan to do poorly in battle so he could say, ?I told you so.?

Of course that was not the Xani he was now or at least not the one he should be. The one he was now liked Obi-Wan and wanted him to do well. After all Xanatos realized he would never be apprenticed to Jinn again. The most he could hope for now is to successfully fulfill his padawanship and become a knight. After that maybe occasionally he would be partnered with Jinn on equal ground. That was his hope.

Xanatos would have to learn that he had to decide with certainty which Xanatos Crion he wanted to be. One that bordered the dark or the Jedi apprentice to Yoda worthy enough to be a knight one day.

Proof of his abilities to ignore the dark side was his father when he blew up the mines. At another time he would have gone along with his father, but not now.

Obi-Wan was very pleased with himself although he tried to keep his self-pride at bay. He felt the warm breath of someone beside him. The person sneaked up without a word and he suspected it was Master Yoda testing him again. It seemed everything Master Yoda or his master did was a lesson to be learned.

?Are you trying to surprise me Master Yoda??

Try I did. But admit I failed I will not. Remember my words there is not try only do?? . A chuckle came from the little green master.

?I will take that as a compliment. Master Yoda. Is something on your mind??

?Not only wise you are of your surroundings but feelings right on target also. Yes speak with you I would.?

Yoda waited a moment as if he had to think through what he wanted to say. That was an unusual occurrence. Normally Yoda was never short on words.

"Maybe to hard on you I have been. Fault of yours it was not that harmed I was or tortured you master was. Wanted you to see I did, capable you are of doing anything set out to do. Now you must believe that and go forward. Good for my former apprentice you are . Good for you he is. Now just get the puzzle to fit all of it you must."

?What do you mean Master Yoda? I have more confidence in myself but I still think it would be better if I step down as his apprentice. I mean look I am blind.

?Self pity again Padawan? Thought that worked through it was earlier. For sure you are blindness for ever it is. Talked with your master about leaving the temple you have.?

    ?Well no.?

Obi shrugged his shoulders and looked in the direction of Master Yoda with unseeing eyes.

?No I haven?t but I know it is what I should do. I just haven?t built the courage.?

?Courage i takest to give up? Think so I do not No courage it takes to stay. Decisions it is rightfully yours to go or stay, however right of your master to discuss it with you it also is. Now that takes courage all unto itself I think. Go now I will. . Just be sure Obi-Wan, be very sure and don?t let senseless pride confuse you for confuse anyone it can.?

With that said, Master Yoda sauntered away as if he hadn?t even seen Obi-Wan.
First thoughts of leaving to let Master Jinn have a more competent apprentice left Obi-Wan for now. He decided he would wait for the outcome of his surgery to *see* what happened.

I suppose that is a joke, *SEE*? I may never *see* again. This surgery I am to have in a couple of days will be my final chance to regain my sight.

    ########Two days later#########

Obi-wan lay in his bed in the healers ward. He had been prepped for surgery and now nervously picked at the sheet that covered him. A surgical cap covered his spiky hair and padawan braid for sanitary reasons. That only added to his look of vulne

    Book2

Obi-Wan tried to shake his head to get the dazed feeling out of it put there by the drug induced sleep during surgery. He couldn?t more his head for the pain.

Luckily each time he moaned even a little from that pain, a light caressing hand was felt on his chest and without a doubt he knew it was his master sending comforting healing force to him.

Master Jinn would actually pull some of the pain from Obi-Wan within himself to alleviate some of the intense pain. It did help and Obi-Wan appreciated it but lingering pain remained and more than enough to cause tears to form in his eyes.

?SSh.. It will be alright. It is just about time for a shot for pain.?

More than the pain was the apprehension in the child about the success of the surgery.

"Well did it work? Will I be able to see when these bandages get off??

Little grunts and moans were woven with his words, but he had to know the results so he grunted out the question in a mumbling slurred sort of way.

Qui-Gon laid his force healing hand on the boy?s arm.

?Obi, we can?t know that yet. We have to wait for the swelling around your optic nerve to go down before the healers can assess the success or lack of it from your surgery.?

Jinn removed his hand that had rested on the boy?s arm to take this thumb and wipe away a stray tear on his cheek. Obi-Wan could except his master seeing him cry but Jinn would not have the child further embarrassed by a healer or a healer?s padawan to see it.

?Oh.? the word escaped from the boy?s trembling lip and he seemed so much younger as he lay there totally dependant right now on his master for his courage and to keep his shields in place. He could not do it and Qui-Gon knew of the immense worry Obi had. He felt it as it bled from wobbly shields made that way from the medication. He quickly raised Obi?s shields and gave him his privacy. But before he well knew the turmoil??. Still with a trembling voice and a quivering lower lip Obi asked another question.

?If I cant get these bandages off my eyes can I at least go home??

?Oh Obi, I would gladly you pick you up and carry you right out of here but you?ve just awakened from a four hour surgery. What are the odds your healer will let you go home??

The brave little Jedi had lost all his bravery along with his ability to control his shields because of the drugs taken. Right now he didn?t care who saw him in such a state of duress.

?I know master, but I just don?t want to be here. I feel worse with these bandages on my eyes. I know that sounds stupid, but I feel disoriented, more blind if that is possible.?

Another person walked in the room and cleared his throat in order to let the master and apprentice know they were no alone.

?Quite natural Padawan Kenobi. I suppose we neglected to tell you that you wouldn?t know the outcome of your surgery immediately. As soon as I found that out I came back to correct that little misnomer, but I see Master Jinn has done it for me.?

The master healer was a little short balding overweight man who had managed to quickly gained Obi?s confidence and trust.

?As for going home, I think you knew the answer before you asked. Good try though. You might well go home tomorrow once you are more awake and eating. However, your master may stay here as long as he wants even overnight if that what it takes to keep you in that bed.?

Obi-Wan accepted the healers demands very willingly for sleep was quickly overtaking him. He grasped for the hand that had brushed away a tear and fell asleep. The master healer found a chair and scooted it under Master Jinn so he could sit down.

?Here you will need this. I don?t think the boy is going to let go of that hand until we release him tomorrow. I will have last-meal sent up to you later this evening.

    ?Yes that would be good.?

?I will also have some food sent Obi-Wan. Something light perhaps some broth or jell-o to get him back on the road to g

    Book2

Qui-Gon convinced himself he would be able to encourage Obi-Wan to eat more once their guests left. Xanatos and Obi-Wan had been deep in a discussion when the cakes and tea were brought in by their respective masters but not a word passed between them after all four congregated around.

Instead Obi-Wan slipped back into a state of melancholy, similar to the one he was first in when injured. That perplexed his master but he attributed it to Obi-Wan?s worry of the outcome of his surgery.

That has to be it. Too much going on around him. Once things settle down he will be fine.

Meanwhile Xanatos was his normal bubbly self, as he chomped on a sweet cake that normally Obi-Wan would have devoured in one bite. Occasionally he stopped and as Yoda observed, he would literally stare at the other padawan with a frowned brow as if something serious was on his mind.

Had Yoda been as blind to what went on as Qui-Gon was, he might have thought just like him. He might have wrongly assumed that Obi was anxious to find out about his eye sight. However, Yoda down through the hundreds of years had learn to watch without being seen, to see without saying what he saw.

Master Yoda *saw* a lot more than Master Jinn. He saw an unnamed discord had developed between the two padawans. While he had his own suspicions as to what it was, he kept his mouth shut. He would watch unnoticed.

As bad as it hurt the little master, he knew that if his suspicions proved true, Xanatos would have to carry all the blame for the rift between the two. So much so that he might well have to leave the order, only this time for good.

Qui-Gon happened to look over and see Yoda shaking his head with despair written all over his face. Qui-Gon had been his apprentice and had known him all but maybe a couple of years of his life and he knew well the expressions of his former master.

?Is there something wrong Master Yoda??

A look of concern graced Jinn?s face as he continued to watch his former master.

?Wise you are young one. Know me well you do. Things wrong there may be, but nothing concerns you it does.?

Yoda knew better than to try to lie to Qui-Gon besides he always tried not to lie. However, he wasn?t past side-stepping the truth.

Master Jinn was not sure whether to believe Master Yoda entirely. He knew how he tried to keep things from him that would bring him any kind of worry. Always like a father to Qui-Gon, Master Yoda was. Now as Jinn grew gray with age it still didn?t matter. The former padawan to Yoda always enjoyed being called *young one* or *youngster* by Yoda. No matter how old he got it made him feel younger when Yoda would say it.

Qui-Gon?s comm link interrupted the two masters as an urgent message came in from Master Adia Galia. It had been requested by the Senator Palpatine himself that Qui-Gon personally go to the other side of the planet and see to it King Organa and his son, Bail be escorted back to Coruscant. Their ship had been sabotaged. There was worry that an assignations attempt was planned.

?I can't go now. Obi-Wan just got out of the med ward."

Obi-Wan listened more intently than before . He didn?t want his master to have to go on a potentially dangerous mission alone.

Surely they will send a knight or another master with him.

Master Yoda spoke in the comm to Master Galia.

?Alone he can not go. Forbid it I will if I must. Go I should.?

Master Yoda you have a meeting with Chancellor Volarum about the trade agreements. That can not be ignored or put off. I can see if another master or possibly a knight is available to assist Master Jinn.?

Yoda directed his stare into the screen of the holoview comm. Finally he threw up his little claw hand to stop Master Adia.

?Necessary that will not be. Loan him my apprentice I will. Work together very well they do. Care for Padawan Kenobi, my honor it will be.?

Master Galia only shook her head. She was thankful she did not hav

Qui-Gon had left a very disappointed and sad Obi-Wan standing at the landing port when he left with Padawan Crion at his side to retrieve King Organa.

Master Yoda felt it was safer to travel by hover craft over land instead of making a very visible target in the air on the King?s ship that was easily recognizable because of its ornate and unusual design. Besides the king's ship needed extensive repairs.
It took a tug to his robe sleeve by Xanatos to draw his attention back to the present.

?Did you here me master I never really imagined this would happen again??

?What Xan? I am sorry I must have missed part of the conversation.?

?Yes like all of the conversation. I said I never dreamed you and I would ever go on a mission together after I was assigned Master Yoda as my master. Of course we went on a mission but not just you and I without our respective master and apprentice.?

Jinn instantly realized this mission had a more symbolic meaning to Xan than it should. They were only paired together because of Obi-Wan?s recent surgery. He didn?t want to hurt Xanatos? feelings but he didn?t want him to be misguided as to what this meant. Qui-Gon got the distinct feeling Xani would very much like to *pretend* they were master and apprentice again. He could tell by the exuberance in the apprentice?s voice.

His first thought was to correct Xani?s thinking so he would understand this did not mean things could change, they couldn?t.. Even if Obi-Wan was not his apprentice Qui-Gon just couldn?t snag Xani away from Yoda. Yoda seemed rejuvenated by having apprentice again and Jinn would not interfere, even if he had any desire too.

The truth was, there was no desire now to pair with Xanatos again. He thought the right master to keep in line had him. Yoda was what Xanatos needed as well as the other way around; Yoda *needed* Xani.

Qui-Gon finally decided to himself he would leave things as they were unless Xanatos voiced more innuendoes of possibly pairing again with Jinn. If he did, Qui-Gon would have to set him straight.

Maybe I am making more out of Xani?s words than needs to be made. Maybe it is nothing and I have blown this out of proportion. I will wait and see.

?Yes it does feel right to be back together. I am sure after Yoda helps you reach knighthood, we will have missions together. I think Master Yoda would have it that way as a way of making sure his apprentice is safe during the first couple of missions.?

Although Xanatos thought himself capable of being on his own on a mission the thought of being paired with Jinn was a good one. He felt he had something to prove to Qui-Gon and the only way to do it was to be together on missions and let his former master see he was more than capable and that he did Qui-Gon?s training of him justice.

Why the overwhelming need to be excepted, Xani did not know except that he looked up to Qui-Gon not only as a mentor through his young years, but as a father figure.

After the catastrophic happenings on Telos and the deceitful actions of his father, he had lost all respect for the man, all of what little he held for him was gone. When he attempted the death of even Qui-Gon during the mine explosion the elder Crion killed anything between them as father and son.

Xan realized that now.. That episode convinced him his father was not the man he perceived him to be; not the man he betrayed Qui-Gon?s loyalty for. No, it was a mistake and Xanatos wanted to correct it but most of all he wanted to show Master Jinn he could be worthy of his trust again.

    ######################

Qui-Gon never had an inkling that they were followed. Whoever it was , was able to hide their presence behind a cloak of a force not known to the Jedi.

The two Jedi had no sooner pulled up to the King?s ship to have the king and young prince board the hover craft than they were surrounded by a group of Ninja type warriors in all black save the red slash that banded their waists. Quite a surprise for the royal ones and the two Jedi.

    Jinn placed hi
