I'm sure that most people would wonder what these 3 characters have in common.

    1. They each died in their respective episode.

    2. Their actions could have changed the course of the universe in a major way.

    3. Each is a throw-away character developed to bring false hope to an audience while producing a smoke screen for the major characters.

Darth Maul's major contribution was killing Qui-Gon which helped GL justify Obi-wan teaching Anakin. Where his action is in common with Red Leader and Coleman Trebor is that he would have ran Anakin over and killed him on Tatooine had Qui-Gon not told him to "duck."

Red Leader got the first shot off on DS1. Had his shot found the mark Luke would not have used the Force to destroy the DS, and DV wouldn't have pursued him in the remaining episodes.

Coleman Trebor could have ended the battle on Geonosis immediately had he killed Count Dooku, which probably would have saved alot of Jedi in the process.

Wow. this is a really random and actually quite intriguing thread. kind of in the same school of thought as the "INFINITIES" EU comics.

    Nice theories, BobaFrank. Quite valid.

There are lots of unsung heroes in the Star Wars saga,Red Leaders heroic attempt to destroy the Death Star was spoiled because it was a difficult shot that only a Force user could have easily made his skill almost won the battle of Yavin, his sacrifice against the DS itself in the end was trying to destroy weapons enplacements by crashing into them after his ship was crippled, Coleman Trebor would have had more luck against Count Dooku if Jango Fett hadnt been there to distract him and overwhelm him but i doubt that he could have defeated dooku in a duel and probably would have been cut down quickly.

Darth Maul's purpose was Sidious's brutal enforcer he was a living weapon against the Jedi and to his credit he was very efficent against Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and only simple aggrogence cause his death,he became cocky after he defeated qui-gon and was suprised by obi-wan, it was the will of the force for him to die at mauls hand so that Kenobi could become a Jedi Knight and fufill his destiny by training the Chosen One,

In fact in the ROTJ novelization obi-wan even tells Luke that it was his destiny to teach, darth maul was being a usefull tool for obi-wan in reaching this destiny.
