They are one in the same, but what title do you prefer?.
I grew up on the original Star Wars, but I prefer Darth Sidious to the Emperor. Just sounds better and more mysterious to me.

Darth Sidious sounds silly to me.
I prefer the Emperor or [insert title] Palpatine.

The Emperor, but I enjoy Sidious as well.

I used Palpatine for years and have alternated between it and Sidious when discussing him.

I use "the Emperor" when referring to him in the OT or when he's acting Emperor-ly in ROTS, I use "Palpatine" when referring to his Senator/Chancellor persona, and I use "Sidious" when he's acting Sith-ly in the PT (talking to Maul about getting revenge, talking to Dooku about how the Clone Wars have started, talking to Grievous about having a new apprentice, and whenever he pulls out a lightsaber).

I prefer to say Palpatine because The Emperor only refers to 23 years of his life, and we didn't know he was called Darth Sidious until the prequels. Since there isn't a Palpatine option, I will vote The Emperor.

Looking at the OT alone, the emperor, but looking at the prequels and originals, then Darth sodium. As far as the films are concerned, Palpatine is merely an alias, with the character's deepest roots laying with the Sith. He is never referred to by name in the films, though he is in contemporary books.

This is my approach as well. It's also why I refer to Luke's mentor in the existing SW films as "Obi-Wan", as distinct from the 1975 drafts' "Ben Kenobi."

I never use "The Emperor." It's either Chancellor Palpatine/Palpatine for his Republic days, Darth Sidious to describe him in Episode I, II and the first half of Episode III and Emperor Palpatine in the OT. I use Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine interchangeably in the last half of Episode III though.

I guess it kinda depends on what persona your talking about but I just call him Palpatine.

When he's hanging out with his best buds after blowing up planets and overthrowing governments all day and knocking back Corellian ales, he's just plain ol' Sheev.

I tend to use Emperor Palpatine or Darth Sidious. I never use "The Emperor".

If I'm feeling really old-school (or particularly British), I might even refer to him as Palpa-TINE.

Pretty much this for me as well! I usually alternate between "the Emperor" and "Palpatine" when discussing the Empire era, though.

Sidious is as real a name as a character enveloped in deceit like him can get.

Emperor is just a generic title and Palpatine just another name of a family. Darth Sidious is a more exact name and Darth a special uncommon title.

Darth is so uncommon a title, in fact, that almost every dark-sider in the Legends EU has it.

Personally, I'm sick of darths. Give me something snappy like "Jerec" any day.

It is. It first appeared in the novel "Tarkin", which, to my knowledge, was the first novel to be part of the current canon.

Yes, Sheev replaced Palpatine's Legends EU first name of "Cosinga", from the Darth Plagueis novel. Which was a nod to the original name of the Emperor in the 1974 rough draft, Cos Dash-t.*
