Right. It made the moment a little more powerful and made Vader less one dimensional. He was thought of as a monster. Everyone forgets that. He was considered the penultimate villain at that time. Before ESP, there was thought that he was a hideous monster alien under there. It shows that even a man, a simple man, could personify evil. It was shocking that he was so pathetic. So broken, So old. Had such pain on his face. He did seem regretful. And this was before we even saw him killing children.
I loved the scene where Vader is unmasked. Powerful and shows us how frail and weak he really was.
