    This has been a very sweet story so far. It's very nice to think of Ben as not being just some crazy old hermit who lived up on a hill somewhere, but wonder if he actually allowed himself the emotional attachment of a family. Causing the reader to speculate about whether he had a wife and child kind of gives a little extra oomph to his death, so good job on adding a little more sentimentality to such a well established character. The girl herself also seems fairly interesting. I wonder - did you model her after yourself as a fourteen year old?
