was the death star 2 smaller than the first

 

In the opening crawl it says "the empire began construction on an even more powerful death star" or something like that. I've always taken that as meaning it's bigger.

 

When completed, the second Death Star would be twice as big as the first. It also had the ability to target smaller, faster-moving objects such as capital starships.

 

I thought its diameter was just 20 or 30 kilometers more than the first.

 

I think it should have stayed at that original length. I agree, it's more reasonable.

Here let's have the facts of both sides.

OS says the second DS was 160km in diameter, they seem unconcerned about the whole topic.

Others like Saxton note the original model builders scaled it to be 900km in diameter.

Take your pick.

It seems 120km for the first is accepted but even that has some dispute, and in another of the ICS books it is stated as 160km.
