"Then we'll have to run," Karrde said, and there was definite emotion in his voice. He looked back towards Hyllyard City. One way or another, he was unlikely to see it again.

Looking forward to the next update! =D=

Enjoyed that very much. Despite Karrde's demurs, I think he knows which side will eventually win--leastways, he's being smart and leaving no options closed permanently. He's not gonna alientate the Empire too much yet but anything he's done for Leia and the NR will stand him in good stead later. [face_thinking]

dancing_star: Glad you liked it. And thanks for the wishes of warmth!

VaderLVR: The next update is ready!

Miraluka: Let's just say there will be a slight break before the next round of action.

Liz: We're closing in on it, that's for certain.

    Jade_eyes: Karrde = options open.

Okay, here comes the next update.

Leia entered the Falcon's cockpit just as Han pulled the levers back, and the freighter jumped into hyperspace. "Lando's settled in," she said, slipping into the seat usually occupied by Chewbacca. While Han stayed with the Falcon, Chewie had taken command of the Lady Luck.

"I knew letting you go off by yourself was a bad idea. But when we get back to Coruscant, we're going to sit down and have a nice long talk."

"About what?" Leia asked. "Han, even with this little bump in the road, I still need to get to the bottom of this contact with another Jedi."

Han sighed, and shook his head. "Leia, I don?t claim to be an expert on the Force. Ten years ago, if you'd asked me if I even believed it existed, I would have laughed in your face."

"You just about did, as I recall. Wasn't it you who made some crack about hokey religions and archaic weapons?"

"I used to be that guy," Han replied, "but he's learned a bit since then. Right now, though, I need you to talk some sense into your brother. He absolutely refuses to listen to reason."

"If you're the one talking, that's probably why," Leia said, offering Han a smile.

"Sarcasm doesn't become you, sweetheart," Han said. "But what Luke's talking about doing is even more insane than you chasing after some? What is it?"

"I just felt a slight tug in the Force," Leia said, suppressing a shiver. "Something's been awakened, Han, and it's not good. It feels like?evil."

"Great," Han said. "You're determined to go chasing after some phantom Jedi, Luke wants to walk right into the hands of the Grand Admiral, and now you're feeling something evil. Can't we just have one moment where the galaxy isn't about to fall apart?"

"What was that about a Grand Admiral?" Leia asked.

"That's how Karrde addressed him," Han said. "Chewie told me that when you made your little run into the forest, Karrde was meeting with an Imperial Grand Admiral."

"So what are we going to do about it?" Leia asked. "The last thing the Council wants to hear is that some puffed-up Imperial is using the title to rally the troops."

Han's tone turned serious. "I don?t know if it's that simple, Leia. Remember that disaster that Fey'lya used to attack Ackbar's competence?"

"Yes," Leia said, feeling already that she wasn't going to like where this was going. "You don't think it really is a Grand Admiral?"

"I don?t know, Leia. That's why as soon as I've dropped you off at Sluis Van, I'm heading back to Coruscant."

    "Why Sluis Van?" Leia asked.

"First, it's close," Han said. "Second, Lando needs some additional medical attention. Third, we need to get your ship fixed up. I don?t want to be stuck hauling your X-Wing all the way back to Coruscant."

"Okay," Leia said, raising her hands in mock surrender. "You've made your point. Once I get my fighter fixed up, I'll join you."

"No," Han said. "I want you to go with Lando to Caprioril. Nobody's heard anything from Mara. If she's gotten into trouble, she may need the help of a Jedi."

"I thought you weren't all that concerned about what Mara was doing."

"I wasn't, until Luke said something about her shying away from the Force. To me, that says that something's going on. And when Jedi start getting worried, the rest of us do too."

Great discussion between H&L there. I love how they exchange views openly and really listen to each other. Their personalities still shine through but you don't have them snipping at each other because it's "THEM." [face_laugh] Glad Lando and Leia will be going after Mara. *relieved sigh*

Miraluka: Mara will be getting her ride back, but it's going to be a bit longer until she gets back, I'm afraid.

Jade_eyes: There's going to be some snipping to come, don't worry. And if you want to get a war of words, just wait 'til Lando and Leia go after Mara. I have a feeling Mara's goign to be a bit ticked about owing Lando.

Okay, here comes the next post. It's probably not the best thing I've written, but my brain's been a bit frozen these past couple of days.

Much less than a lightyear from its target, but still blanketed by the blackness of deep space, the Imperial armada waited, and prepared itself for battle. Aboard the Chimeara, Pellaeon watched as the duty officer approached.

"We've just received word from the Death's Head, Captain," he said. "Her commander is asking for a launch mark."

"Captain Harbid will have to wait," Pellaeon said. "I'm not giving anyone orders until I've received word from the Grand Admiral." He looked back to Thrawn, who was still looking at the datapad Pellaeon had given him a few minutes ago. The Grand Admiral seemed to be reading the report for about the fifth time, unless Pellaeon had miscounted.

"Sir?" he asked, approaching the commanding officer.

"You wonder why I haven't given you the launch marks for the task force," Thrawn said, not looking up from the report. "I trust you read this," he said, now raising his eyes to look at Pellaeon.

"It seems that everything on Myrkr is normal," Pellaeon said. "The troopers still haven't encountered either Karrde's employee or the thief."

"Captain, did you notice the timestamp on the report?" Thrawn asked, handing over the datapad. Pellaeon looked at it, and his blood turned cold.

"Fourteen hours ago? This can't be right."

"It is correct," Thrawn said, and there was a cold, calculating deadliness to his voice. "I left orders for them to report every twelve. What does that tell you?"

"That something's gone wrong," Pellaeon said. "Perhaps the commander simply couldn't?" He trailed off.

"Couldn't be troubled to follow orders, Captain? No, they've been taken. Skywalker was indeed there, under our noses."

"Do we push back the attack?" Pellaeon asked.

"No," Thrawn said, looking past Pellaeon and out the viewport. "Sluis Van marks the beginning of the campaign. It's the one attack that will let the Rebellion know that its days of control are numbered, and that law, order, and stability will be returning to the galaxy." He turned. "You understand, Captain, that this is where the long path to resurrecting the Empire begins. Karrde will keep for another time." He turned his attention to the most unlikely ship in the armada, a battered old bulk freighter that looked like it had somehow survived the Clone Wars, and the ongoing Galactic Civil War. "Is the freighter ready for the demonstration?"

"The captain says she is," Pellaeon said. "I'm frankly not sure what to expect."

"Watch, and learn," Thrawn said. The freighter simply sat there. Thrawn glanced at a profile scan of the vessel, and raised one blue-black eyebrow. "Very good. Inform the captain that he may proceed," he told the officer manning one of the bridge's comm consoles. He then turned back to Pellaeon. "We move in thirty standard minutes. It is time that we remind the Rebellion what war is all about."

"Yes, Admiral," Pellaeon said. He turned back to the holopod, and began giving the other captains their orders.

    Miraluka: Glad you liked it.

    ccp: Thanks!

VaderLVR: Sometimes things work out for a reason. Glad you enjoyed the interaction. I find writing Thrawn and Pellaeon to be a lot of fun.

Jade_eyes: It's fun, because they come from such different mindsets.

dancing_star: I loved writing that last line of Han's there, just because it seems to always be the case. Everything seems to be settluing down, then something wrecks the peace of the moment.

Okay, back to Leia and Han today.

"Now there's a sight for sore eyes," Han said as the Falcon dropped out of hyperspace. "I have to hand it to the Sluissi. They certainly know how to make sure you don't miss them."

"You sound like an admirer," Leia said. "Just don?t forget you have another home."

"Hey, I got all the home I need right here," Han replied, gesturing around the cockpit. "As long as I've got the Falcon, I've got a home."

"I meant Coruscant," Leia said. "You know, galactic capital, center of the galaxy?"

"Battleground for smug politicians like Fey'lya," Han added with a smile.

"Okay, so it does have that going against it," Leia said, returning a smile of her own. "Though not all politicians are like Fey'lya."

"Yeah, I know," Han said. "Your brother's one of the good ones."

"Well, I'm glad you realize that, nerf-herder," Leia said.

"So, what was going on between you and Nera. Looked to me like she was as willing as the Imperials to put a blaster in your back."

    "You noticed that?" Leia asked.

"You may have learned a lot about the Force, sweetheart, but you've got a few things to learn yet about hiding your feelings," Han said. "She looked like she would have been happier if I hadn't shown up. And you made it quite clear that something was going on between the two of you."

"Let's just say that it's personal," Leia said.

"Personal?" Han said. "You're not going to tell me that she had some kind of crush on me, are you?"

"What?" Leia asked, utterly shocked. She shook her head. "You Corellians. You're all so full of yourselves that you could power a small city with your egos alone."

"A small city?" Han asked. "And here I was hoping for an entire planet." He reached for the comm. "Sluissi control, this is the Millennium Falcon. Request permission to dock."

"A whole planet?" Leia echoed. "Sometimes, I just don?t know what to do with you."

"I'm sure you'll come up with something," Han said, watching as a battered old A-class bulk freighter made its way into the orbital dockyard. "Haven't seen one of those in quite a while," he commented.

"A bulk freighter? Han, they're all over the place."

"No, I mean one that looks that beat-up. It looks like your dad could have used it for target practice."

"I really could do without you reminding me about Vader," Leia said.

"I was thinking of Anakin Skywalker," Han said. "Really, that freighter looks like it probably survived the Clone Wars."

"Permission granted, Falcon," a voice said from the comm. "Will you be needing repairs?"

"We won?t, but the X-Wing I'm towing needs a new hyperdrive, as well as some other minor repairs."

"Understood, Falcon. We'll be ready for you."

Loved the exchange about politicians... great distinction between the smug and the good ones. It definitely is always the right time for the good ones. :D It's just a pitiful shame they have to put up with the idiots with self-serving agendas. :p

Okay, here comes the next post. It's abit short, but it's got the return of some familiar faces.

"I'm certainly glad to be reaching the end of this mission," Wes Janson said as Rogue Squadron cruised into the Sluis Van shipyards, still escorting the cargo vessel to which they'd been assigned.

"You're not going to suggest that it's gone too smoothly, are you?" asked Hobbie Klivian, flying on Janson's wing. "I mean, it's nice to have a mission go the way that it's supposed to."

"Sure, it's just that if this keeps happening, our edge is going to get dulled."

"Then keep your eyes open," came Corran Horn's voice. "I've got a bad feeling about something here."

Only a few meters away from the others, Wedge Antilles realized that something was tingling in his gut too. He keyed for a scan of the nearby ships, and his eyebrows rose. The bulk freighter the squadron had just passed was reading as totally empty. For the life of him, Wedge couldn't remember the last time he'd come across a totally empty freighter. And what wa such a ship doing in the middle of the dockyard. Granted, the thing was old, but it didn't look like it had suffered anything but cosmetic damage.

"Keep your eyes open, Rogues," he said. Then the whole thing went straight to hell. The freighter erupted ina massive fireball. And as the thing broke apart, Wedge recognized an oddity. He couldn't see past the freighter. And from the speed at which it was coming apart, he should have been able. Especially given that the thing was supposedly empty.

"I'm picking up drive emissions," Tycho Celchu said. "Wedge, this mission just fell into the Omega category. That freighter's full of TIEs!" Indeed, Imperial fighters were now boiling from the freighter's location.

"I don't know how the Empire snuck them in here," Wedge said. "But let's deal with them. Rogues, targets of opportunity. And whatever you do, try not to hit our ships. Ackbar's in enough political hot water as it is. S-foils to attack position. Rogues, this is where we really earn our pay." And if we all make it though this, Wedge thought darkly, I'm going to have to have a little talk with Jansen about tempting fate.

Wedge hit the throttle, screaming towards the boiling cloud of TIE fighters. The sooner the X-Wings hit them, the less time the Imperials would have to organize themselves. Maybe, we can make this a quick and clean battle. But as he glanced at his scanners, he realized that wasn't going to be the case. The Imperial Navy had arrived.

Somehow, Wedge thought, this might just be the beginning. He wasn't sure how he knew, only that it seemed to be the case. He could only hope that it wasn't the beginning of the end.

Miraluka: Yet somehow, our heroes have a habit of turning up in those same places just in time to save the day. So I guess the real points got to Luke, Han & Leia.

    VaderLVR: Glad you liked it!

Okay, I'm running a little late this week due to an after wrok meeting last night, but the next post is ready, so here goes!

The Falcon passed the outer ring of shipyards, which were designed to accommodate capital class ships, and headed inwards, where smaller docks awaited. But even as Han navigated the shipyards, searching for the berth that the Sluissi had assigned, something caught Leia's eye. A moment later, the comm squawked. "Alert! Imperial TIE fighters in the orbiting dock!"

"Was that Wedge?" she asked, looking at Han.

"Sure sounded like him." Han keyed the comm. "Wedge, that you?"

"Han?" Wedge asked. "What are you doing out here?"

"Had to come and pull Leia out of some trouble," Han said. "Turns out she managed to wreck yet another X-Wing. I begin to see why you fighter jocks wanted her out of your ranks."

"We'd be happy to have her back any time she wants," Wedge said. "Speaking of fighters, you don?t happen to have a couple of wings with you, do you? The Imperials snuck some TIEs in, and they're really making a mess of things."

"Is that what's going on over there?" Leia asked. "And how did they manage to sneak fighters past the Sluissi?"

    "Not sure," Wedge said.

"Sorry, buddy, but it's just us. Luke's got Lando's yacht, but she's not exactly what I'd call a fighting ship. Give us a moment to drop off Leia's X-Wing, and we'll be able to give you a hand."

"Make it fast," Wedge said, and signed off.

"Any chance we can get me to my X-Wing?" Leia asked. "I know the hyperdrive's shot, but it would give us another ship to use against the Imperials." Even now, more Imperial vessels were dropping out of hyperspace. The incoming Star Destroyers were opening up on the shipyards, and the docks were starting to turn into deathtraps for the ships berthed there.

The fact that the TIEs were buzzing around causing havoc of their own didn't help matters. "You know, one of these days, I'm going to ask Ackbar whose idea it was to turn warships into cargo carriers," Han said. "Turning a freighter into a fighting ship is one thing. Going the other way seems?"

"Seems what?" Leia asked. "Han, we thought the war was pretty much over. The Empire had been driven back to a fraction of the territory it controlled. And it seemed like the Imperials were more interested in fighting amongst themselves than coming after us."

"It just seems shortsighted," Han said. "The Imps were probably just waiting for us to make a move like this. And now, they get to sit back and laugh at how naïve we've been."

"Just because we'd like to hope that the killing can stop doesn't make us naïve, Han," Leia said. "It makes us better people."

"Think what you'd like, sweetheart, but the truth of the matter is that someone's always going to be after what some other being has."

"Fine," Leia said, rising. "I'm going to go check on Lando."

"Great," Han said. "And make sure Threepio's strapped in. I don't need him up here while I'm trying to keep Imperial fighters from turning the Falcon into so much slag around us."

"I'll head for the quad turret after I check in on them."

"Take the upper one," Han said. "I might be able to give you some better shots."

"Got it," Leia said, exiting the cockpit.

Okay, old girl, Han thought to the freighter, let's show the Imperials why attacking a New Republic facility is a bad idea.
