Miraluka: I think that it's a given that the Imps will have a bad day when the Rogues are involved.

dm1: I'll be surprised if Han's baby doesn't hold together.

Okay, here comes the next post!

"All ships report that they have engaged the Rebels," Pellaeon reported. "Our fighters have completely disengaged from the freighter, and the stolen mole miners are moving into position." He looked at Thrawn, whose gaze wasn't focused on him, but rather on a rapidly dwindling speck.

"Did you see that, Captain?" he asked.

Pellaeon hadn't seen, and wondered why Thrawn would have focused on one fleeing ship when there was a larger battle to contend with. "Excuse me?" Pellaeon said.

"That was the Millennium Falcon," Thrawn said. "And it an X-Wing with it."

"Not too surprising," Pellaeon replied. "Solo must have called in the cavalry. Not that they'll be able to get here in time."

"It wasn't part of a squadron, Captain," Thrawn said. "The Falcon had it in tow. That means that Karrde lied to us."

    "I don't understand," Pellaeon said.

"The only reason that Solo would have come here would be if he needed repairs. Either for himself, or for someone he was close to."

"You're saying that Leia Solo was on Myrkr, right under our noses?"

"And the best the Empire had to offer allowed her to escape," Thrawn said. "When this battle is over, I'm going to see that our stormtrooper contingents get some badly needed experience."

"Surely by then, Karrde will have fled."

"That is a possibility," Thrawn said. "But even the scraps that he will undoubtedly leave behind will tell us something." He turned his gaze back towards the battle. "Inform the spacetroopers to focus on the Mon Calamari Star Cruisers. They'll be more heavily defended than some of the smaller ships. There's no need for overkill there. And inform our TIEs that Han Solo and his wife are on their way in. It would do nicely if we could take them here and now."

Pellaeon was about to reply when one of the comm officers began to gesture frantically. Pelleon stepped over. "A B-Wing is requesting permission to pass through our screens and dock," the officer said. "The pilot claims to be Lumiya."

Great, Pellaeon thought, his jaw tightening. Of all the times for the Dark Lady to return?

"Let her come aboard," Thrawn said. "And then see that she is made comfortable. I shall attend to her as soon as this battle is completed. And make sure that she understands that any disobedience will be dealt with in a manner that even a Sith cannot walk away from."

Miraluka: Sith have a habit of turning up when they're least wanted.

dancing_star" Glad you liked the post.

dm: That 100 yard run was abit amazing, though I thought they were going to lose it there at the end. Now I can turn my attention back to baseball, and my Brewers.

Jade_eyes: Who was it that said that the price of peace is eternal vigilance?

VaderLVR: Let's just say that that little confrontation is something I look forward to writing.

Okay, here comes the next post!

"Leader, Four," came Hobbie's voice. "Any idea what those truncated cone-shaped things are?"

"No idea," Wedge said. "But there were about fifty of the things packed in with the TIE fighters. Odds are that they aren't here on our behalf."

"And here I thought you Corellians didn't believe in luck," Janson added.

"Only when someone's talking about the odds against us achieving something," Wedge replied. "And it's not so much that we don't care, it's that we seek to prove the other guy wrong."

"And there are plenty Wedge has proven wrong over the years," Hobbie replied.

"Yeah," Janson added. "Iceheart, Zsinj, Tarkin?"
    "Palpatine," Hobbie added.

"I think that one to give Luke credit for," Wedge said. "I don?t think for a second that I would have lasted very long if I'd gone face to face with the Emperor. But we've got business to attend to. I see one of those truncated things heading for a?" There was a bright flash right near one of the Star Cruisers. "What in the name of the Force was that?"

"Plasma jet," Han's voice came. "Those truncated cone-shaped things are called mole miners. If I'm right, these are the ones that the Imperials stole from Lando. Though what they're doing here is a complete mystery."

    ***

"Well, whatever they're doing, let's put an end to it," Wedge's voice said. Han looked at the empty co-pilot's seat, and wished again that he had Chewie with him.

"Han," Leia said from the quad turret. "Isn't the spot on the cruiser right near the bridge?"

"Yeah," Han said, getting a funny feeling. "Matter of fact, I'd say that it's right near the escape hatch. Though why the Imps would be concerned about that if they're here to wreck the fleet doesn't make sense."

"Unless they're not here to wreck it," Wedge said.

"You're right," Han replied, the truth dawning on him. "The Imperials aren't here to wreck the fleet."

"What?" Wedge said, his voice sounding thoroughly confused.

"Look at some of our other ships," Han said. "They're not firing on the Imperials, and yet they're moving towards them. A few even have a small TIE fighter escort. The Imperials aren't here to wreck the fleet. They're here to steal it."

"Somehow, I like that idea even less than the idea of them wrecking the fleet," Wedge said.

"I agree," Leia added. "If they strat using our own ships against us."

"Lando," Han called. "Lando, get up here!"

"You had me make sure that he was strapped in after he took that blaster bolt on Myrkr," Leia called down from the turret.

"I know that," Han said, remembering. "Go get him unstrapped, and get him up here."

"You just figure something out," Wedge asked.

"We were there on Nkllon when the Imperials stole the mole miners from Lando," Han said. "And it took me this long to recall that we had to work through some jamming. I must be losing my touch."

"I don?t get it," Wedge said. "They aren't jamming us here."

"Right," Han said as Leia entered the cockpit with Lando. "So why were they jamming us then?"

    "Got me," Wedge said.

"It's because I had most of the mole miners running on remote," Lando said as he eased into the copilot's seat. "Less expensive than having to crew all of them."

"So how does that help us here?" Wedge asked.

"Because I know most of the command codes," Lando said. "And unless the Imperials did some massive recoding, most of them should still work."

I think I returned to this story at just the right point! I love all the wonderful twists on the battle of Sluis Van, and I have a very bad feeling about the Emperor being back, and just as evil as ever! I can't wait to find out what he's up to, and when Mara's going to get home...
Sorry it took me so long to drop in again, but this is wonderful and well worth the wait!

Yup, Way to go Stillers, I mean Steelers! My oldest child is a yunzer, born in Pittsburgh! May even get to go back, to college at Pitt! He got accepted at the engineering school, let's see what scholarship packages they can come up with to get a native born son back...

Good thing they figured out that Lando could re-task those miners; won't that be a hoot! Tsk tsk, trying to steal a whole fleet... not very nice of those Imps, is it?

Miraluka: I love the way Zahn hand;es the space battles. He gives us just enough that we can imagine what's happening, without dragging things out.

SithGirl: Welcome back! Palpy's going to be creating quite a wrinkle in things, but it's probably going to have to wait until the second part of this story.

Liz: You'd better believe that changes are coming.

dm1: You expected the Imps to be nice? What universe could that occur in? A parallel one, perhaps. Oops, better not go thinking that way, it might lead to plot bunnies...

Sorry to say, but the weekend's been a bit busier than I'd expected. Thus, while the next post is in the works, it isn't quite ready. So keep the home fires buring, and I'll have it ready for Wednesday.

    Here's the latest post!

"I see a pair of TIE fighters running escort for a mole miner," Han said. "Wedge, you and Rogue Two hit take the fighters, and we'll nail the miner."

"Roger, Falcon," Wedge said. "Though wasn't the idea?"

"That was the idea, Wedge," Han said, shooting a glare at Lando, who was working furiously with the comm. "Lando's having a little trouble redirecting the mole miner."

"I wouldn't be having these problems if Han would get more up to date comm equipment. You'd think he was on a government payroll or something."

"If I was on a government payroll, and I'm not," Han shot back, "everything aboard the Falcon would be top of the line. But since I'm not, I have to scrounge what I can."

"I know a droid who might be of some help in that regard," Wedge said. "Though he does sometimes tend to talk a bit too much."

"Good, we'll sit him down with Threepio when we get back to Coruscant."

"That might require you reactivating your commission, General," Wedge said.

"That some kind of joke, Wedge?"

"No. Just a simple statement, given that he's the squadron's quartermaster."

"And therefore, he's got plenty of access to classified material, which means that letting anybody get near him is a potential security risk. Sometimes, I think you mention these things a little late just to give me a headache."

"But if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to get rid of the one I get from Janson."

"Very funny, Wedge," Janson's voice came in. "You guys actually plan on doing something, or should Hobbie and I do it while making your retirement plans for you?"

"The day I let you make my plans for me, Wes, is the day I put a blaster to my head and seriously think about pulling the trigger," Wedge replied. "Let's just hit the mole miner before the Imps grab any more of our ships."

"Right," Rogue Two said. "I'm with you, Rogue Leader." The two X-Wings broke forward, engaging the TIE fighters and forcing them to abandon their escort of the mole miner. It didn't take the guidance of the Force for Leia to line the miner up in her sights. She fired a quad blast that hit the miner dead center.

    "One miner down," Leia said.

"Remind me to send the New Republic a bill for the property that you're destroying."

"Not going to work, Lando," Han said. "They're enemy combatants. The Republic can't be held responsible for the Empire's actions."

"So once again, you're leaving me holding the bag," Lando said. "The next time you need help, I'm really going to have to think about sending you on your way."

"Hey, you're the one who turned me over to Vader," Han said. "It's not my fault that you made a deal with the devil."

"Fine," Lando snapped. "Let's just get this over with. Then I can head back to Nkllon and forget all about this sort of thing."

Miraluka: Yup, the space battle continues. But that'll be wrapping up within the next few posts.

And here comes the next post!

"Lando, you said you had these things drilling into the crust of Nkllon, right?" Leia called from the quad turret.

"That's right," Lando said, getting over his momentary fit of pique. "Best way to get at the minerals that lay beneath the surface. Minerals that could prove very valuable if released correctly upon the open market."

"So how does it work I don?t see anything that looks like a drill."

"They use a plasma jet," Lando said, and it was as if a light bulb had gone off. "That's it!" he shouted, and began feverishly punching commands into the comm. It took Han a moment to catch up, but he figured out what Lando was doing.

"You're just going to start them running?"

"They're all located near a command center, or at least the ones that have attached themselves to ships are," Lando said. "You and I both know how delicate some of the circuitry on board the capital ships can be, especially the stuff on the bridge."

"Um, isn't that going to wreck the fleet?" Wedge asked.

"Better than letting the Imperials get their paws on the ships," Han said. "I don?t like it, but I don?t see that we have a whole lot of other options." He shook his head. "Good thing we resigned our commissions. Ackbar's going to have my head for this one, and yours too, if he can get at you."

"I take it that's my cue to get out of here?" Wedge asked.

"Might be a good idea," Lando said. "if this doesn't work the way I think it will, there's going to be a lot of heat going around."

"I'm willing to take a little heat," Wedge replied.

"No use risking your career," Han said. "I know you don't like being ordered off?"

"You?re a civilian now, Han," Wedge said. "You don't have the authority to give me orders."

"Just consider it a strong suggestion, Wedge," Leia said.

"I suppose I can take a suggestion from a friend," Wedge said. "But if you need help, you need only call us."

"Thanks, Wedge," Han said. "And the first thing you can do to help is apologize to Ackbar for what we're about to do." He turned to Lando. "Ready, buddy?"

"I'm as ready as I'm going to be." He hit the final switch, and sent the signal that would, if it worked, make the fleet completely unusable to the Imperials.

    ++++++++++++

Ooh, they are scuttling the ships rather than letting the Imps have them... ok, I guess. Too bad Han's comm equipment isn't up to snuff for retasking.

Ackbar is going to have their heads for this one! Somehow, I wonder if this will even go as planned.

Miraluka: Things are coming to a close with tonight's post.

imperial_Warlord5: Welcome to the fic. Zahn's trilogy has been one of my favorites as well, which makes giving it the "Infinities" treatment a little tougher than if I didn't care as much for the original work.

dancing star: And more is on the way!

dm1: Not so much scuttle as disabling...

    Jade_eyes: Glad you liked it.

And here comes the last post of Destiny's Heir.

"Admiral, we've received word that the ships we'd commandeered have ceased motion," Pellaeon told Thrawn. The Grand Admiral merely continued to gaze out the viewport at the burning shipyards.

"Order the fleet to prepare for the jump to hyperspace. We'll take what ships are still operative."

"But Admiral, we need those ships. You said that without them, the campaign will require more time. And time is something that the Empire no longer has. Especially with a Sith Lady breathing down our necks."

"Gaining the ships here would have struck a blow to the enemy's morale, and further prepared them for the campaign to come," Thrawn said, turning to Pellaeon. "We shall merely have to acquire the ships in a different fashion. This was merely to be the preliminary to the campaign. The Empire will not wither and die in a single battle, Captain."

Pellaeon was shocked. He recalled how Vader would have handled being dealt a defeat like this. "Then we aren't going to press the attack."

"We will only press it as long as it will take to recover our fighters. Once they are aboard, we wil take from this defeat what victory we can. The Rebellion can rest, believing they have defeated us. We are not defeated, Captain. We have the Emperor's storehouse, and the cloaking shield. With Lumiya's return, we have our pet Sith back." Thrawn smiled. "And I suspect she is even more anxious to take the fight to the Rebels than before."

"It shall be as you've ordered, Admiral."

"Let the Rebels enjoy this victory," Thrawn said. "It just might be the last one they ever get."

Thrawn was different from any other Imperial commander, Pellaeon realized. He wasn't looking to the end of this battle, or even the next. He has planned out the campaign to the end, and left it flexible. The Empire might have been defeated at Endor, and in the years that followed. But with Thrawn in command, the Empire stood a chance of not only regaining its place, but becoming stronger than ever. Yes, Pellaeon thought, the Rebels might have won this day. But they would have few victories to look forward to.

    ***

"You think I liked the idea of wrecking the entire fleet?" Han asked. "You think I don?t know what the cost of that decision was?"

"I was not arguing with your method, Captain Solo. I was merely pointing out what others will say. Wrecking the fleet in order to save it might not have been the most efficient method of stopping the Empire's plans," Captain Afyon of the Quenfis said. "But it may have been the best you could do under the circumstances."

"Han," Leia said, approaching her husband. "I just finished talking to Luke. We've got more problems than we thought."

"Somehow, I don?t think I'm going to like this," Han said, making a little shooing motion in Afyon's direction. "What is it?"

"Two things," Leia began. "First, Mara's been stranded on Caprioril. She ran into an old friend of ours."

"Wait a minute. Wasn't that where you were headed?"

"It was," Leia admitted. "It appears you were right about that call not coming from a Jedi. Mara ran into Shira Brie. And it seems she's picked up a few tricks since she stole Biggs's X-Wing during the victory celebration at Endor."

"Okay, so that's the first bit of bad news. Tell me the next part's better."

"It's not," Leia said. "Fey'lya's had Admiral Ackbar arrested and removed from command."

"For what?" Han exploded. "The Empire's making an offensive push, and Fey'lya decides to start playing more than his usual share of polit
