A project I'm working on for a fanfilm. I took the Yoda 3 model from scifi3d.com and used the head as a base geometry. Currently trying to model all the wrinkles and stuff. I got kind of sidetracked and fooled around wih some facial expressions too. I plan on texturing it, adding hair, and using some nice sss. I'm hoping this will look good on screen, but as of now i've got a long way to go. Facial morphs are OK. The detail is a pretty good start although in some places it looks low-quality, good start though.
wow.... it almost looks like you're happy to see Yoda in pain (joking) Great head model (lot's of details )
Thanks for the comments. I definetely agree with darthviper that some of it is low-quality. One thing im really not happy with is that ear on the right, where I modeled these random lines and holes. I want to go back in and redo it at a higher resolution and texture it at the same time. I just need some better photo references. I need a high-res one with his head faced forward definetely, and if I'm lucky one on the side. I've tried ripping the movies, never found the right angle. And I know yodajared had a similar problem a while back, and that PDF that was sent to him is not of much use to me (because i dont need it 2 look at, i want my textures to be based from that). So where do I find these?
So i borrowed the episode 2 bonus dvd from a friend 2day, and watched "puppets to pixels." I still couldn't find what i needed. I need a high-res pic of yoda's face, with him looking straight on you. So i can project it onto my model as a texture. Does anyone have an i dea where 2 get these.
I don't think that would be the best idea, it might look good but it won't work for many other things. The best thing to do would be to make the textures yourself so that you can just render it and it'll look good in all situations.
does anyone know if yodajared's yoda model is available somewhere? i made a decent amount of progress since i last posted, but i need to start over with a whole new model (long story) and i figured i mine as well using a better one.
UPDATE [image=http://img282.imageshack.us/img282/7134/yodatestqx1.png] Turned out okay. Some stuff to ignore: the image quality could be a little sharper, that annoying green light was just me playing around with some lighting styles and sub surface scattering (i think it might b wut i use for if his lightsaber is ignited and reflecting on him), his ears arent textured very well i didnt give him hair or eyes
Looks good so far. Add a bump map, specular map, and render with a better light setup and I'll think you'll see a big improvement.
wow this is very good... almost as good as the ilm version... i like it alot... especially the various emotions
Okay, I added the bump map and specular map (i took it kind of easy on the bump map, though because i personally don't like the way they look [especially closer up]). i also fixed the sub-surface scatterring and gave him eyes. his ears are still mapped bad, though, and i didn't give him hair yet. he's definetely coming along, but i he still needs a lot of work. Are you using Mental Ray in 3ds Max? It seems you've got some weird settings. Here's a good tutorial.
I'm using Poser 6. When I said I "fixed" the sss, i meant i got rid of that annoying green light. i still need 2 play around with it more, right now i'm mainly focused on getting the model and texture right. my texture seems decent from over here, but its resolution is actually pretty low. I need to fix that and then the model itself (model more detail), that way i won't have to rely so much on bump and displacement, which i personally am not a fan of (especially bump) and can work more on the skin. but other than that there is still something off with him that i can't put my finger on. it just doesnt seem to capture his likeness very well, especially in the eye area.
