yeah, i know my german instructor has a hard time translating some things every once in awhile. the ones that trouble me the most are the "flavoring particles." the two i have learned so far are "denn" and "doch." for instance, in "was brauchst du denn?"

in regard to the difference in sentence structure: it's so hard for me to translate sometimes because first i have to figure out what all the words mean and then try to make sense of how they are put together to figure out the meaning. *bangs head on desk* your language is so awesome and so difficult! hehe

i have thought of a question for everyone, though. the word "ich" i have been taught to pronounce it as sounding like "ick," but i hear some people say it like "ish." does the pronounciation depend on region? or is there an absolute correct way to pronounce it? how do you all say it?

ohhhhh, ok. thanks. one of my classmates says it like "ish" and he has taken german before (in high school). every german singer i've heard says "ish" as well. so i thought "this can't be right."

I think most people in my school say "ick" but thats just the way we were taught in 7th grade.
I kind of use both without even thinking. :p

I'll check out the music later, I have some homework tonight.

So is it spring yet in Germany? It supposed to be spring here but we still have some snow.

    Pete :)

"ish" is also the name of a company working with cable and television here in Germany. This lead to some word-games / jokes with "ich" ... ;)

hallo all. thanks for the "ch" info. does that mean then, that "mich" and "dich" should sound like "mish" and "dish"?

also, i have this song that i found which i thought was by nina hagen, but it sounded a little unlike her and i can't find it listed in her discographie. so have any of you heard of a song called "weil ich mädchen bin"? i googled it and didn't have any luck.

    I know it, I know it!!!! :D

It's the first CD I ever bought! ;)
It's from a band called Lucilectric. The singer is Lucy van Org.
The song is called "weil ich'n Mädchen bin"
"'n" is a shortform of "ein"...I just didn't want to confuse you ;)

I really would like to link the lyriks.... but I'm at work and all the homepages are forbidden....

Ok, I'll see if I can rent Grosse Pinte Blank.
Peter und der Wolf is a cartoon musical. We watched it in German class.
Then we had to write 200 words about it in German. :p

Yeah, spring vacation has started. This week of school was crazy. I had so many tests.
But now that its vacation I was able to listen to the Nena songs.

I was able to listen to Nur Geträumt, Leuchtturm, and some others.
Its good music, really fun and energetic.
She has a good voice, but I didn't understand all the words. :p
Also I liked it cause it is very different. :)

    Pete :)

question: i have heard (from movies and what not) that smoking (cigarettes) is more common and acceptable in europe. i don't know whether this is true or not as i have never been there. in america, smoking is kind of looked down upon and you are not allowed to smoke in many places. so, i was wondering, how is it there in germany?
