In Germany quite some public places are smoke free zones, like stations, airports and some public departments. In Restaurants some are smoke free and some have a part for smoker. On the streets there is smoking not forbidden.

The goverment tries to regulate the smoking over taxes, so less young people start smoking.

 

they raise the prices for cigattes, everybody complains, but they don't quit smoking. in my opinion they should raise the to 10 Euros per pack, put 5 euros from each pack into a special fund for lung cancer and other smoke-related illnesses. basically make the smokers pay for their own diseases!

Smoking is a huge problem over here I'd say that about 50% of the 15-25 year olds smoke. (number of smokers drops with older age)

I don't smoke and never have.
I don't like the smell and smoking is bad.

 

On special occasions I smoke a cigar, but that is quite seldom.

Hate smoking. Only thing I did, was considering weed for a few weeks. Nothing more.

I think that won't be necessary. We just confiscate you ligher and matches or let you smoke outside.

ok, last night i was talking to some people on another forum and the words "welche dummheit" was directed at myself and some other people...i take this to mean "what idiots" or something along those lines (although every time i've heard "welche" it's meant "which," not "what"). anyway, i wanted to respond with "that was rude" so i said "das war unverschämt." was that the right way to say it? i know literal translations don't always work out.

edit: also, what does this mean: "Was oben mit allen diesen Leuten ber das Drittes Reich jetzt ist,die Tage un-gebildet sind??"

out of that all i know is "what" "with" this" "people" "that third reich now is" and then something about "the days" (tage) and "are" (sind).

 

It is not that comon these days, but it appropriate. Another idea would be "Das war unhöflich." which means unpolite. Depends on who you want to tell that.

I don't get all of sentence. I am not sure what it should mean.

 

I´d translate "welche Dummheit" with "What a stupidity" and your reply was, as Mac said, a tad oldfashioned but correct

And the other sentence does not make much sense what so ever. I don´t understand much more than you do. Ungebildet means uneducated or unculitvated and ber isn´t a german word at all. Oben can mean upstairs (I doubt it does in this case but well...)or so much as above. To me that looks a bit like the creation of a poor translation machine.

 

Grrr...evil translation machines.

I played with a translator and that is exactly the phrase one has to enter to get the above sentence. I just couldn't get the part after the comma to work ?

I think, basically, it means: People know nothing about the Third Reich these days, because they're unedicated monkeys

May I back track a bit??
While in Düsseldorf (great city BTW Senny, I liked it lots ) I was quite surprised to see cigarette machines on public streets. I mean the problem with that is any kid could go and buy some and no one could stop them really. We don't have anything like that here (apart from in pubs) so are these machines still working?

I also know how you feel sabine, smoke gives me headaches and makes my eyes really sore. I think Jedi-con should have been made a 'No Smoking' zone through-out the venue.

 

We also have cigarette ads in public. And yes, the machines are working.
But these days people are more concerned about kids drinking than kids smoking - they're taxing stuff like Smirnoff Ice and Rigo, cause they get the young ones into drinking.
Meh, kids these days, wusses all around. When I was drunk the first time, it was because of pure vodka
