Is there really that much of a difference between the forum's regular traffic and a trailer surge that would cause it to crash?

 

Our site is too large for the hosted server we are on. It just manages to cope with regular traffic but a surge for a trailer is enough to exhaust what extra resources are there. I think yesterday it was MySQL that died, given the error message I was getting. Unfortunately all I can do is send an email to Grimby and Philip at that point since I don't have access to the server to restart processes.

When I worked on mainframes it was the IPL. That 'usually' fixed any problem.

 

Sounds familiar. I was a programmer and then a DBA so I didn't have a lot of contact with end users. Our Help Desk was between me and them.

 

The thing I mostly remember tech guys saying is "it's not supposed to do that".

 

Yep. The old IGN servers were much more capable of handling the flow of traffic when AOTC and ROTS came out, though during the era of AOTC, there were other issues that messed up the servers.
