In Episode V, we hear Lord Vader telling Admiral Piett if his men had deactivated the hyperdrive on the Falcon. Do you think Vader may have sensed Leia & Co would make an escape in the Falcon or was he planning on keeping it for himself as a personal trophy. If he really wanted the Falcon soo bad, he would have had Stormtroopers guarding it, like in the hangar scene in ANH.

I don't think Vader cared about the Falcon, he just wanted to capture everybody. With a deactivated hyperdrive, the Falcon could escape Cloud City but be captured by the Star Destroyer's tractor beam.

Vader wasn't after the Falcon at all - he was after her crew. Remember, Vader was bent on finding Luke and where was Luke at this moment? Aboard the Falcon. Once Luke and co. were in his custody, the Falcon probably would have become scrap metal.

If Vader didn't have any interest in the Falcon, why didn't he just have it scrapped right there on the platform, instead of going through all the trouble having the hyperdrive deactivated, which would have avoided the senseless chase in space.

I always wondered if Lando had a personal spacecraft to escape in, since losing the Falcon to Han.

Because that was how the story was panned out. Plus it would have really looked bad if they blew up some random ship. The Empire wasn;t trying to make a lot of noise on Bespin. It was a quiet operation, until obviously the take over.

Vader really couldn't care less about the Falcon in itself. He cared more about capturing the gang, and even if he could capture them along with the Falcon, it would be of no use to him. The ship would probably be broken down for Imperial use or it would be sold off anyway. Why would something so insignificant be of interest to such a person of high status? Lord Vader had the best ships in the galaxy at his disposal.

If Vader ever had an interest in the Falcon, it was definitely for the engines. Vader had to have been impressed with the power and speed of the Falcon, as he saw it blasting out of the hangar on the planet Hoth. He probably would have had the entire ship renovated and painted in all Death Black and rename it the "Vadermobile", LOL.

"I want that ship, not excuses"

    Clearly he envied Han's pimpmobile

I agree with what somebody said above - that the empire wanted to keep things quiet until Luke Skywalker arrived. The whole purpose of capturing the crew was to torture them in order (I assume) to send out distress waves that would reach Luke. And since very few people could resist going to help their friends in need, the plan was then to lure Luke into an isolated area where Vader could capture him for the emperor.

Blowing up the Falcon would've have instigated suspicion and concern, and likely wrought chaos if it came out what was really going on. Look how quickly things got out of control when the empire was discovered on Bespin. Vader didn't want anyone alerting Luke early on as to what exactly they had in store for him, nor did he want anyone interfering with the capture of either the Falcon's crew or Luke Skywalker.

Yes, easier to deal with our heroes if suspicions aren't raised at first. Have to work in a roundabout way, which is what the Bespin plot is all about. They would have found some way to escape anyway... if it's on a ship with deactivated hyperdrive, all the easier to find when they do escape.

I thought Vader would have been interested in the falcon as he is interested in ships and the like. If he heard the rumours about the ship I'm sure he would like to see the Falcon close up

Vader was going to use it as a disguised ship using a secret Rebel code so it would be able to carry a strike team to destroy the Rebel Shield Generator.

They didn't have enough Bothan spies to gather enough information, though.

Plus, Vader had a personal vendetta. The Falcon was the ship that allowed Luke the clear shot at the Death Star.

he really didn't want the falcon he wanted the people within the ship. He knew if he caught Han,and his companions, he knew Luke would come. At the end he wanted it because Luke was aboard. Notice how he said "set guns for stun." He wanted them alive.

    Vader has the Executor.

What in the world would he want a junky freighter for?

Vader wanted nothing of the Falcon. He wanted Luke so he revel the truth that He is his father and try to lure him to the Darkside of the Force. He Captured the his Friends in doing so.

There is a hint thou. When I watched the Classic Trilogy along time ago before The Phantom Menace I wondered why would Vader Incurge Luke to kill the Emperor and why the Emperor would Incurge luke to kill his Father. Well the Phantom Menace did Explain the Rule of two in the Darkside of the Force.

Vader probably preferred to let them "escape" with a deactivated hyperdrive rather than completely disable the Falcon in a way that would keep them from leaving Cloud City. That would create a chaotic situation where the rebels were in a hopeless chase and firefight throughout Cloud City, and in that situation they might not surrender until one or more of them had been killed. Vader wanted them alive. Star Destroyers are designed to seize ships in a very efficient manner and the odds were greater of recapturing them all alive in such a contained space where the Imperials had practiced seizing ships countless times.
