He was testing Luke's patience. And, as was par for the course for Luke, he failed!

Well, the fact of being alone in a very dark and damp place for 20 years might take it's toll on someone. Yoda was nearing his species' life-expectancy & probably prolonged it longer with the help of the Force. Plus Yoda states that the Dark Side was a heavy presence on Dagobah, so that probably took a toll on him. He was probably happy and anxious to find out what Luke was made of, the new types of food, the built up isolation.

Whether it took that much of a toll to change his appearance, well just look at Palpatine from TPM to AOTC (that is a whole different thread too).

 

I hope we see at least Yoda happy and not serious when he's with the bear clan. The PT Yoda needs to lighten up, I mean the only thing that happens is that 10,000 Jedi are soon to be extinct and 2 sith take over the galaxy. I've had worse times than that in college.

 

Those weren't normal plants there on Dagobah. Poor little guy had nothing else to do all day than get blazed.

 

ESB Yoda = Best. Yoda. Ever.

Also note - people who are mad, crazy or senile DON'T just snap out of it.

You're senile, or your not. Yes, I realise people drift in and out of lucidity, but they don't suddenly come right, as Yoda did upon revealing his identity to Luke.

So now that we've all seen AOTC...
It is obvious that Yoda changed quite a bit from that film to ESB

I think his mind slipped a little bit because of all that isolation on Dagobah.

 

I think that Yoda was testing Luke's character.

I've seen in other threads, and Yoda mentions it in AOTC, that the Jedi have become arrogant. Heck, in TPM, OB1 refers to Jar Jar as a pathetic life form.

In AOTC, Anakin talks about compassion being central to a Jedi's life.

What better way to test Luke's character than be a little dotty and see how Luke reacts?

 

to thoise who say Yoda is strong in the force, but not that strong to keep his sanity for the 20 years he is isolated, i have a few things to say.

1)How do you know his strength in the force is not strong enough to keep him sane?

2)who says that Yoda is alone on this planet? Luke claimed that there are "some life forms" down there. One could argue that there was more intelligent life on the planet. People here live in swamps, look at the florida keys for example. There could be a scattering of people... just no large cities or industrial centers.

3) the force is in all things, maybe yoda can connect in some ways to some of the animals on the planet?

I think Darth Me has a point...

Yoda spent quite a good deal of time on that swamp planet. His health was failing...and so was his mind.
I think when he guided Luke's X-Wing to the planet, his old ways came back to him. But he was still a little "off".
Years in isolation had warped his mind a bit...

I like the idea.
