I was surprised to see Hailfire droids, considering we didn't see them once in the entirety of The Clone Wars.

The Outrider was just a generic YT-2400 freighter, which we see in the trailer, anyway.

The PT is the biggest joke. anyone who thought the original trilogy was stupid or boring has to hate Star Wars or be very young.

The PT had its moments. I didn't mind the politics when Palpatine was involved. What I really wonder is how JJ's going to deal with it in the new film -- people have been asking him to keep politics to an OS-level minimum (Empire = bad, Rebels = good, no senate jabbering), but I dunno... I sort of think the OS's plots were often a little too black-and-white (well I guess the PT wasn't much better, despite ROTS's "heroes on both sides" disclaimer)

But seriously, is anyone here going to panic if the ST gives us more senate scenes?

Fanboys that want 'plosions and stuff, I guess.

Frankly, I found the political material to be the most interesting part of the PT.

This is one of the reasons that I'd rather there not be a republic in the ST. In addition to giving the heroes something left to accomplish, it would free JJ from having to include senate scenes.

Anyway, no, I won't panic at all if there's senate scenes. I will panic if a senate exists but does everything offscreen.

I caught up on 2-3 days worth if this thread. Now I need to go hit some young punk store clerk with my walker and demand my senior citizen discount NOW.

The correct way to view the saga is each film in the theaters, three years apart.

    For the OT.

Then wait 16 years, pay attention to a lot of hype and shadowed posters and Pepsi cans, and watch each PT film three years apart.

...while asking "What the hell happened to Lucas?"

And yeah, the PT had its moments. The politics were highly caricatured but that didn't bother me.

I don't mind politics, and think the problem in the PT was the same problem that gave us "Oh Anakin!" and "NOOOOOOOOOOO!"

But with better writing? It could work. I enjoyed some of the Senate scenes in the NJO, like when Nom Anor addressed it, etc.

Having said that... I'd prefer not to see it. Both because of what darklordoftech said, and me also wanting the restoration of the Republic to be something the heroes get to finish during the films, but also because-- even if there is a Republic again-- I don't think seeing senators squabbling is really needed. I mean, Star Wars is mostly about the laserswords and space battles, and it's not like you need to see inside the House of Commons in a film about D-Day or the Battle of Rorke's Drift, so I'm perfectly fine keeping the politicians largely out of it-- we didn't need them in ANH or ESB.

I enjoy grey in Star Wars (and actually wish Dooku had been more grey, and the fallen Jedi Master who wanted to save the Republic, not the snarling Sith Lord who turned Evil with a capital E overnight), but-- like so many things in Star Wars-- it just needs to be written well, and actually have some sensible character development behind it, without endless politicking over trivialities.

It's why I enjoyed characters like the Covenant in the KOTOR comics, or Revan's original story before TOR walked all over it, as those characters all had more to them than just being snarlingly evil.

    Agreed.

Since the Final Fantasy people like Star Wars, I'm going to make a Kingdom Hearts analogy... and say that I've always found Kingdom Hearts a good parallel to what I do and don't enjoy in Star Wars. The Keyblade? Cool when it was special. In KH2? Okay, more than one now, but still cool. Birth by Sleep? Initially turned off by the idea of lots of them, but it ended up not having armies of them, and those armies only being legends from time immemorial, which I didn't mind, as it had that mythic "before time" quality, which can be enjoyable.

I am, however, concerned that KH3 is going to suffer the Inverse Ninja problem, due to Dream Drop Distance setting up there needing to be so dang many keyblade wielders.

And that is a sentiment I always feel reflected on my attitude toward lightsabers.

For the most part I agree.

But I like a sympathetic villain or flawed hero if they are written well.

And by written well, I mean not heavy-handed with "LOOK! The heroes are actually REALLY REALLY FLAWED! This is a NUANCED story! Now PONDER the NUANCES!"

I'll take 'splosions and stuff over that.

I actually don't like the black/white villain/hero business, if only because there's nothing to reflect on. It's just sort of boring. The problem with much of the EU, where it tried to do the "gray" Jedi and all that, was that we ended up with characters wasting too much time feeling sorry for themselves.

For instance: Han Solo being sort of a "gray" character in ANH was done right. He wasn't wallowing in his own moral misery. Jacen Solo *before* Traitor was not done well -- his moral logic was flawed to the point it didn't make any sense, and he started to get annoying ("I won't even save Luke if he's in trouble because I might hurt a Vong!"). Quinlan in parts of Republic began doing that from time to time, as did Tahiri in LOTR (or FOTJ... whichever one she was seducing Ben in) -- there comes a point when a character becomes so conflicted that their actions don't even make sense anymore.

I'm not saying everyone has to be GOTG "just a bunch of a-holes"/Han Solo-type flawed, but I need something more than perky heroes vs soulless baddies to keep me interested.

Especially since the main message of Star Wars seems to be:

"There is darkness in the light...

I just need to be entertained, I don't care how it's done. I've been greatly amused by black/white, and I've been fascinated by ambiguity.

Wow. That reads like a very specialised academic paper, and I didn't understand a thing.

But yeah, keep lightsaber users to a minimum, Disney people. :p

It's interesting that bearded Jedi Master Luke was only ever Allston's mirror universe Luke in Betrayal, isn't it. Clearly one more ball that the EU dropped.

Luke had a beard in Children of the Jedi, as I recall, though only because he didn't have access to a razor. :p
