Most gratuitous genocide in Star Wars history.

 

One thing I'm glad about for the EU reboot is that hopefully we'll never see the name "Dac" again. Really hated that name. Although I guess now we're stuck with Mon Cala thanks to TCW which is a close second in terms of dislike.

 

I wonder if our fine feathered French fan friends feel the same way, seeing as they're required to take an alien race named "my squid" seriously...

I swear, that planet has had more names over the years than Istanbul.

Mon Calamari, Mon Cala, Calamari, Dac...

Some radical Quarren nationalist probably calls it Quarra Prime or something.

 

Well, I pretty much hate all the names Byzantium/Constantinople/New Rome/Istanbul has had throughout the years, and I pretty much hate all the names Dac/Mon Calamari/Calamari/Mon Cala has had over the years. But I can at least live with Byzantium and Dac. Calamari, though? Seriously? CALAMARI? Calling a planet "Calamari" should be punishable by gruesome methods.

I would, however, be thrilled to see the planet in the movies even under its more reprehensible names.

The more rumors I come across, the more it seems like they're talking about a Dark Empire adaptation. Normally, that would make me very, very, very happy, but I don't buy the rumors.

 

Dark Empire -- that is, the crux of it, Luke and Leia's arcs -- only works shortly after Return of the Jedi.

I mean, as far as Dark Empire goes, I know everyone dislikes clone Palps, but to me, that's really not that important to the story. If they were to adapt Dark Empire, I could easily see that gone. The important stuff is Luke and Leia's development into Jedi, and that's kind of impertinent now.

Unless they're doing the whole Dark Empire/Legacy of the Force thing with new characters. Which has a pall cast on it now due to the latter.

 

Yeah no. I have a feeling most of those rumors were made up by people who wanted a Dark Empire adaptation.

Looking at you Latino Review with your "Palpatine's coming back but he's not McDiarmid" crap.

 

i still wish they were doing a straight up DE adaptation. it would be so amazing.

 

As DigitalMessiah notes, it doesn't really work that well with the timeframe.

that's why i said straight up adaptation. like, with new actors and everything.

I think it's unwise to assume we'll get a DE film adaption when they seem pretty clear they have no intention of using EU materials for 7. DE wouldn't be my first choice anyway.

I think this is a solid bit:

An essential quality of nearly all Star Wars first-person role-playing games is that the player can choose whether or not to turn to the Dark Side. In the films, the difference between light and dark is hard to find. Sure, one side has Darths and the other, Jedi Master. But the functional difference between the two is explained primarily by Yoda and his cave of dreams on Dagobah, and it’s all deliberately a bit empty.
The EU, at its core, is about making sense of the mythos—the Talmud to the Torah, the Apocrypha to the Bible. And that sometimes means showing its audience how enticing and rewarding the Dark Side can be. Jedi Knight and Knights Of The Old Republic, which are both multi-game series, do not force players to lose the game if they choose the path of the Sith. They are just asked to live with it.

edit: no seriously that assessment is dumb. the dark side isn't rewarding. it's extremely unfulfilling.

 

I get way more emotional satisfaction out of the dark side KOTOR ending but that's just me.
