That's great camerawork. I wonder if it's a steadycam. Whoever is behind the camera, he's good. :)

Well, it clearly wasn't Abrams, I don't think there was a single lens flare in the entire clip.

is that music from the dark knight

it's kind of cringeworthy that it transitions from william's beautiful score to that

Look at the scale: it's a tiny, tiny Batmobile. Clearly this means an appearance by Colonel Gascon.

Well, if they can afford camerawork of this caliber for some online joke on this production, it's clearly the kind where the director is not handling the camera himself, you know? ;)

But if that's the operator & grip/steadycam guy who also works on the film, we can expect nice tracking shots, smooth as a hot knife through butter.

In all seriousness, though, the moment I see a lens flare in Episode VII, I am going to yell at the screen. I don't care how crowded the theater is with cosplayers, there will be cursing.

Did you curse at the screen the first time it happened?

To be fair, there is a big difference between regular lens flare and J.J. Abrams lens flare. One is a useful effect, and the other blinds you.

A deliberate stylistic choice in one movie. A visual metaphor for Star Trek's "brighter future." You don't have to like it (I did, though I'd prefer the writing reflect that bright future more than the lighting. Then again, eleven out of twelve Trek films have failed at that), but it's not the definitive trait of his film career. Mission Impossible III was frenetic and emulated news footage, Super 8 aped classic Spielberg almost to a tee, and Into Darkness... Well, that movie's just kind of a mess all around, but the lens flare was gone!

Directorially, he wears his influences on his sleeve, and since he's making a Star Wars film, I'd expect it'll, y'know, look like a Star Wars film.

Thank you for posting that. The only thing more tiring then the lens flare jokes are the people who are non-jokingly worried about it.

It's weird, most traditional films shot on actual film work to avoid lens-flare, since it obscures the frame and might damage the film itself. In fact, most camera makers design their hardware to eliminate it as much as possible. In the digital age, lens-flare is now a stylistic technique. Basically every 3-D game made in the PS1/N64 era had it to simulate lighting in artificial worlds before actual lighting engines existed (Quake II, Ocarina of Time, Ace Combat 3, etc), and films that construct effects sequences artificially use them to simulate realism (or hide/disguise models, see Blade Runner's spinners and Close Encounters' UFOs).

The lens-flares in the opening to ANH are likely the latter-most, while the ones in Abrams' first Trek film are (actually) almost entirely natural. Apparently the set was so brightly lit that the cameras caught light from just about every angle, the ones in space were the only ones added in post. It was a happenstance that Abrams ran with as a stylistic choice, something he's admitted he went overboard with both in that film and Super 8. Into Darkness, notably, had much less lens flare. Aside from maybe one or two just to yank peoples' chains (JJ is a troll-lord of the highest order as we've all seen by now) I highly doubt Episode VII will have nearly as much.
