I honestly have no idea what you are talking about. First of all, there's not that much "porn" in GOT to support your argument. Secondly there's much better options out there for people who want porn than GOT. And lastly you are completely ignoring the fact that it's one of the best shows ever made from a technical and artistic level - so yea I don't agree with your point at all. Nobody watches GOT for the T & A

To be honest ... not really.

Even using modern history, there were widespread celebrations at the fall of communism which widely as the time was supposed to herald in Russia as a non-player/non-threat in geopolitics, but here we are 30 years past that and Russia and the US do seem be locked in another proxy Cold War at least.

Obviously the analogy doesn't fit 1:1 because it's not a full blown conflict the way TFA seems to be set up but the general idea is there.

Also immediate celebrations breaking out in Coruscant (where the Jedi held sway for a lot longer than the Emperor did and the Emperor's reign was probably more restrictive), Naboo (probably didn't take well to the Emperor's fascist rule given its choice of Padme as their Queen), Endor (obvious), etc. do make some sense. In Bespin they probably felt they'd have less business interference and what not.

I'm sure also at the end of World War I, many countries celebrated the defeat of Germany ... we know how that turned out in the long run. So even in historical context, the ending of ROTJ does work.

Beyond that I think it's probable that Palpatine was a popular figure early in his reign, but that likely lessened as planets got a taste of Imperial rule ... the fact that they basically had to dissolve the senate and use the fear of a giant space weapon to keep everything humming along would suggest that by about 15-20 years after the events of ROTS that many planets had started to sour on the Emperor/Imperials. So it would make sense that news of his death and apparent victory of the Rebellion would be warmly greeted around many planets.

I think I'll reserve judgement until I see the movie and get a feel for how things are portrayed. I do worry that they're de-valuing the RoTJ ending in favour of re-using the Empire concept for financial/marketing purposes.

It reminds me of when The Old Republic MMO abandoned a lot of the KoToR visuals to make the game look like it was Empire vs Rebels (under different names) - there were star destroyers and troopers, even though it's thousands of years before the movies and their own previous game didn't look like that. IMHO, the story should drive the marketing/visuals and not the other way around. Hopefully this isn't what's going on with TFA.

    Thank you, EHT. Whew!

Anyway, back on topic, I agree with you, unicron5. Although the analogy is not on all fours, there was a lot of evocative imagery in Rebels that suggested the old Communist propaganda posters. I wonder if TFA will draw on that. I'm getting that North Korean feel from the Starkiller images in the teasers. It's not Russia, but still, it's that whole Communist motif.

Case in point. Celebrating the end of WWII -- the world was far different in 1975.

Why? Send word out over the holonet that the Death Star was blown up and that Vader and Sidious were dead. People would cheer at that. Seems legit.

Wait, what? I don't get the analogy - decimation of traditional values? extremist left infiltration? Pretty sure that didn't happen, unless you're calling neoconservatives "extremist left", since it's their ideology that has been in full reign since the collapse of the soviet union. So, I can't really see how the ST could be an allegory for some kind of communist conspiracy to take over the US, given that never happened.

Besides, GL is openly a left liberal. Why would he want to demonise leftists anyway?

No, I'm not talking about the extreme right. I'm talking about the extreme left.

And yes, that was my point about George Lucas. He is openly liberal. Hence my statement that it's unlikely his original story would have gone that way. Even less likely now that Disney has purchased the franchise.

Except the "extreme left" hasn't been remotely relevant in the developed world since the 70s. I don't get how they could be metaphorically important at all in the ST.

Because the extreme left is extremely relevant in the developed world. But I don't expect the film to play on that analogy, since, besides the fact that t.v. and film -- Disney in particular -- push very liberal agendas, as you pointed out, George Lucas, the developer of the story on which the sequel trilogy is based, is very liberal himself.

All that notwithstanding, to get this thread back on point despite all attempts to derail it, the fall of the Empire at the end of the OT is in no way diminished by the existence of the ST, since we have real life analogues: just because you topple an imperial infrastructure doesn't make its idealogues disappear into thin air.

Right. And whether their progress or ambitions at all affect the impact of the defeat of the Empire depends largely on how closely the First Order is tied to it: if they're just modeled after it, or if they are a direct continuation of it. There may be spoilers out there that reveal that, but I'm trying to avoid those.

I remember how, before TPM came out, many believed that the Trade Federation was the precursor to the Empire, when, in fact, it was just one of many pawns Sidious used to create an empire out of the Republic.

Are you completely oblivious to left-wing infiltration? Liberal = neomarxist. And full reign? There's a stench of modern left-wing idiocy all over Europe and North America.

Not only is 30 years enough for another conflict to arise, I'm sure we're all familiar with power vacuums and the like, that are created when regimes are toppled.

Yeah. As Arkham Knight showed, life in Gotham got worse when the Joker died.

Frankly I'm sure many of the moffs and military officers were glad that Palpatine and Vader died. Not every mistake will be punished by death for a change.

...but it's also the first age he was when he killed a bunch of kids and threw away everything he ever cared for because of a bad dream about his wife dying in childbirth in an era where, medically, such a thing should never happen!

The last age Anakin was good was 5 minutes earlier when he saved his son on the Death Star. :p
