Others have done it better, but Tolkien did it first and that counts for a lot.

Wonderful series, but the Silmarillion was the best thing that Tolkien ever wrote.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin is better.

    LOTR es la bomba!
    LoTR meeto patu poof!
    LOTR is the bomb!

Yeah, Silmarillion is like a bible or ancient history/lore of middle earth... It's quite challenging to read IMHO. But still very interesting.

Of course I like LOTR. I've read many books in my time, some better written, sure, but LOTR has a special place in my own personal history. My dad would tell me the story when I was very little and I first read it for myself when I was about 9 years old

It was this book we have to thank for all the many Fantasy books we now have, and for my own interest in all things Fantasy & from there Sci-Fi, including SW.

IMHO it is one of the best. Can't wait for all 3 films.(and Harry Potter).

Closer to "best book ever written."

I also enjoyed The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth, and all twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth, in which Christopher Tolkien publishes his father's unpublished manuscripts from about 1915 to 1973 and recounts the evolution of J. R. R. Tolkien's conception of Middle-earth.

For the person who said that there's no new material...believe me, you're missing a gold mine...

I've been a fan of the books since 1968. I've seen the movie twice, and plan to see it at least two more times. I loved it!

I appreciate the detail that went into the creation of that world, but I don't think Tolkien was a good writer by any means. So, no, I don't like LOTR.

I loved the books and I loved the movie! Yeah, it was boring at first, but after a while, the story just sprouts wings and takes off! :D

One of the few books I've never managed to finish, since it was soooo boring. Have seen the film, didn't like the story in it even if it was a beautiful film.

I can't really say it was the best book ever written. I had to choose the third alternative anyway since I am quite a LotR lover too..

It was a beautiful book, and I really appreciated the details, which I look out for a lot in books.

    Saw the movie; loved it.
Decided to read the books: They are so great! At the beginning, sure it's weird... there are people always singing! But later you just can't stop reading it. Now I can't wait for the Two Towers and Return of the King. I'm about to read the Hobbit and the Silmarilion(sp?) and I hope I'm gonna like them too.
