I like the movie, but the books and especially Silmarillion is far greater.

I'm reading TLOTR for the second time (i first read it back in 1999) and i love it. The movie was really good too (but i can't believe they left out Tom Bombadil!).

It took me a few attempts to get into the Hobbit but once i did it was worth it.

I can even write and read the Runes of Middle Earth. (they're actually very easy to learn.)

I like my allegory a la Lewis, not Tolkien. (Narnia is VERY serious.) Lord of the Rings is not my cup of tea. Plot over character? I'll pass, thanks.

I like the movie, and the books are OK, but I have read parodies that had more thought in them then each.

The first book of The Fellowship of the Ring is very slow, yet afterwards the pace does pick up somewhat and it does become easier to read.

I found myself straining to read the first book and almost quit. I would have if I hadn't spent twenty dollars on the damn thing, so I read the whole novel.

Overall it is quite well done, but by no means the greatest of all time. There are plenty of other books and novels recently written and composed throughout the ages that warrant much more praise than The Lord of the Rings.

LOTR and HP are my favorite books. The movie is probably my favorite non-SW film as well.

I'v just finished the hobbit and I'm can't wait to sink my teets in LOTR.

For the hobbit, the true strenght is how he tells the story, not the story itself. The story is pretty regular.

In that regard, the movie doesn't do Tolkien justice.

Nevertheless, the movie was great. Specially the caracter developpement.

There is just one scene that I didn't like. It's the Moria battle. Shakes way too much. Can't see anything!!! It's more a matter of direction than story.

Can't wait for The Two Towers.

I think that the books are well written and that the movies are entertaining - so my vote goes to 'It's OK'...defiantly not the best books ever written. :)

Yes it was good, though I have not rea the books. I also found though that the second movie: "The Two Towers" to be more of an action film of my liking.
