Is there any game where you get to design your own SW ship and fly round the Galaxy blowing up other ship and smuggling etc

A bit like frontier for the Amega (spelt wrong) but SW

Uh, maybe the Star Wars Galaxies space expansion will let you do that...

When Rogue Leader is ported to the PC, it will have multiplayer capabilities. (J/k, sorry Sithman! ;)).

As for what the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games are like, well, they are basically simulators. Games like Rogue Leader and the like are what's called "arcade games." Fast-paced, no thought required, 2 buttons needed type of games. Fun, yes. But for a whole different reason.

The X-Wing type games basically stick you in the cockpit of those famed starships from a galaxy far far away and give you complete and total control and freedom over the ship. Dogfights are quite literally dogfights. You get to manage your shields however you want (and it's definitely necessary in the heat of battle.... now you'll know what Han meant when he said, "Put the shields on double-front!"). The games basically immerse you far more than the Rogue Squadron games ever did/could. You ARE the pilot, and not some guy piloting a remote control craft (and yes, I know you can have a cockpit view in those games, but it is still nothing like the simulators).

The simulators also simulate true space. You are not confined in a tiny box with invisible walls that force your ship to turn around when you hit them. If you wanted to, you could fly hundreds of kilometers away from the battle. Heck, some damaged TIEs actually do that if their flagship books it into hyperspace (or you blow it up) and it can take some time to chase them down and overtake them if they're 50+ kilometers away from you (usually not necessary to chase them down, but there's no way I'd ever let a TIE live).

Another fun thing that was added in the last of the great sims was Hyperspace points. You could have up to 4 different sections of space, each connected via hyperspace points and everything happens in real time in each sector. For instance, you complete some battle and then get a distress call from another part of space. Now, you can either hyperspace there and help out or you can continue fighting in your current area. Your decision could have reprecussions if chosen wrongly.

The sims are far more "realistic" than the arcade games in so many ways. This is the biggest reason why people love them so much. It's also the reason why some people don't like them at all. It's too confusing and too overwhelming for some people. It was the same way with me at first, but once I learned how to manage my cockpit controls (and there are quite a few) amongst other things, people were unable to pry me from those games.

Those X-wing/TIE Fighter games really made you feel like you were in the Star Wars universe. One thing I liked about them was that in some missions, you weren't the sole deciding factor for victory (didn't mean the missions were easy, though). It makes you feel like you're part of something larger rather than a one-man army. In one mission you even get to escort Darth Vader's TIE Fighter!

Then X-wing vs. TIE Fighter ruined the formula by extreme overusage of missiles... it's not fun having to deal with incoming missiles every few seconds, especially when your countermeasures are gone. There wasn't really a single-player story mode either. Oh well, one blemish on an otherwise outstanding series.

There are still a few of us that play XvT and XWA. I love them all, though XWA allowed me to roll my ship with a twist of my wrist vs. holding a button and moving the stick.

Anyone know if there may be another X-Wing series game in the works? I would love to see them implement atmosphere missions (using the snowspeeders and such) as well as bombing missions and ground assaults. There's a host of improvements that can be made where I think it could be the best flight sim ever.

Alas, Larry Holland himself of Totally Games (the company that did every single X-Wing sim from the first one on) told me that they weren't doing any more Star Wars simulator games and that XWA would probably be the last in the series.

Lucasarts may revisit the idea later on down the road, but I am not as optimistic as I once was after getting that e-mail.

The only way we're getting anything close to the quality of XWA is if Larry Holland and the rest of TG go back to LA and make it. LA couldn't make it in-house if they were given line-by-line coding instructions on how to make the best Star Wars games ever.

That said, I hope it does happen. The X-Wing games are easily the best SW games out, and have withstood the test of time. I even pull out my old X-Wing DOS version occasionally.

I agree. Nobody could make a XW game like Totally Games. I doubt even an in-house LucasArts party could come even close to the games TG did.

And Skywalker, yeah, I feel the same way. Though I already got out my anger and sadness over that back when XWA was first released (which is when I got the e-mail). :D

I thought that during one of the chats with the developers for JK2 someone asked if we'd get another X-Wing type/series game and the answer was positive? And that would have been long after XWA was released. Maybe my desire is playing tricks with my memory.

Look for X-Wing Trilogy. It has X-Wing,Tie Fighter, and Alliance Bunddled together. I got it two years ago when it was fairly new for like $40. I'd think you could find it cheaper now. Trust me it's worth it.

Well, so did Battle For Naboo, but unlike RS, RL and BFN, Clone Wars isn't made by Factor 5, so its not the exact same thing- it actually is kind of a mix between the RS/RL series and Starfighter in some regards.

RS3 would probably have to be set entirely during the EU or NJO...or perhaps do "Black Squadron" or "TIE Leader" or something ala an arcade TIE FIghter from the Imperial POV.

" I got XWvTF instead its quite good"

Yeah, that's a good game. But it's actually the weakest of the series in terms of single play and storyline. If you think XvT is good, wait till you try X-Wing Alliance. It's great. You start out as a smuggler who flies a Corellian Transport ship (similar to the Falcon, but far wussier) and eventually end up joining the Rebels. The game leads up to the destruction of the second Death Star (and yep, you fly inside it just like the movies).

Petition to Get a New X-Wing Game

Personally, I loved XvT, especially with BoP. I love doing co-op missions with other people that can think idependantly, and it is the only space combat game that does that. I also loved the fact that you and your friends can go head to head with a SSD and not have to worry about it blowing up your missles (like in XWA). The cutscenes were awesome also, IMO.

Don't get me wrong. XWA is a great game. But I'm a multiplayer kind of guy, and XvT/BoP is one of my favorite games. :)
