We had it, but we also had the conversation about Yoda's line too. So far the best answer anyone can come up with to explain away their statements is that they were lying...

Or, as I said, Tarkin is mistaken. He only knows of Kanan so far; while I think Kanan is the most likely to die of all the Specters, it's no more a forgone conclusion that he must die before ROTJ than it was Ventress or Ahsoka must die before ROTS.

But Yoda lying makes sense, if he's trying to make sure Luke steps up and fulfills his destiny.

I seem to remember people giving alternate explanations. Also Tarkin being wrong does not equate to lying.

I don't think that those are in correct posting order. I was just scrolling through.

If Ahsoka, Kanan, and Ezra aren't Jedi, then by that logic, neither is Luke. He wasn't raised in the Jedi temple and both Obi-wan and Yoda died before Luke's training could be complete so by Filoni's standards, Luke was never a Jedi despite declaring that he was to the Emperor. Now, 5, 10, 20 jedi-types might satisfy the "extinct" remarks for you but it won't satisfy the Emperor nor Vader because to them, "extinct" means zero Jedi should be roaming around the galaxy. If there are other jedi around during the OT, not only will it tarnish the importance of Luke being the last Jedi, it will make Yoda out to be a liar. It's bad enough that George made Obi-wan a liar by making Anakin and Darth Vader the same person in ESB, but I don't want Yoda to be made a liar either. It makes me question why Luke even bothers to trust his Jedi mentors after all the lies they've been telling him.

Luke was trained by the Grand Master of the Order, so he is a Jedi.

I already explained it. Luke is NOT a Jedi until he confronts Vader in ROTJ (Padawans are technically not Jedi, see AOTC & ROTJ). Ahsoka is NOT a Jedi because she was kicked out, and Filoni confirmed it. Kanan was only a Padawan when the Jedi Order was destroyed, and had still been figuring things out while starting to train Ezra, so technically neither may be Jedi.

5-20 Jedi-types still counts as extinct for Vader and Palps, because even if you got rid of most of those, Obi-Wan and Yoda are still there, and they're the only two who were ever really a threat to the Sith anyway. The idea that they manage to kill every Jedi type except the two who are actually plotting their downfall via Anakin's offspring is tired and makes them look nearly as incompetent as the stormies in Rebels. Them killing Padawan Bill, who's not part of a rebel cell and just runs a droid repair shop on Bestine, isn't very impressive when they can't even get the guy who crippled Vader, or who escaped Sidious in the Senate.

Luke's importance is as son of the Chosen One, not as last of the Jedi, so Yoda lying makes sense. Luke is hung up on his father. Knowing that any other Jedi still lived would give him the opportunity to not face him, to pass the buck.
