Honestly, the fact Doctor Who never has the budget it should have is part of it's charm. Still, nobody in 1963 expected to see that 30 seconds of Time War action.

Besides that, this special was about the character of the Doctor, and not about big budget explosions.

Take that attitude to DWO or Gallifrey Base where it belongs.

Also Clara could have not been in the episode and everything would have unfolded exactly the same way.

 

Same argument could be made about Ten... All the crucial stuff was done by Eleven and the War Doctor...

 

She stopped the Zygons getting the vortex manipulator

 

I suppose? I still enjoyed the special, regardless of how much room for improvement I feel there was/is.

EDIT: Yeah, she did, but then she goes back to the trapped Doctors who could have just opened the door and had already figured out a way to get out of their imprisonment. It's a great gag but it's still not giving the character much to do.

 

What she did with it is irrelevant. What's important is she stopped the Zygons getting it

 

And stopped the three Doctors from committing genocide, thus changing the history of the time war and potentially the formula of the TV show itself.

 

Well, she was there when Eleven had the epiphany that taking a third option is sort of the Doctor's entire deal. I don't think she does much there other than emote.

 

I disagree entirely. 11 had the idea only after confirming with 10 and 8b that they were definitely resolved to do it. Their hands were on the button. He only paused because of Clara's tears.

NuWho has made a point on many an occasion that the Doctor needs a companion to keep him in line.

I see validity in emotion, and it was specifically Clara's emotional response which triggered 11's change of heart(s). Your point was that she may as well have not been there, since all she does is cry and say a few lines. I'm saying that Clara being present at that moment (no pun intended) was crucial to the plot. Pivotal, in fact.

 

Clara Oswald alone among the Doctor's companions holds the honor of saving Gallifrey (by stopping the Doctor from using the Moment exactly when he was prepared to use it to wipe out his entire home planet). If that doesn't make her important to the 50th anniversary episode, I don't know what does.

 

Unless of course the Bad Wolf is Rose's presence in the Doctor's personal timeline in which case she arranged everything to fall into place in such a way that the Doctor's soul is saved.
