I don't think it should be handwaved. It would make an interesting story arc for Thirteen - if something happens to him, will he regenerate or will he die? There could be some suppressed fear or unease. And then in the end he'd regenerate, because River gave him her regenerations, or because the limit had disappeared with the Time Lords, or whatever. The rule should be broken, but it shouldn't be handwaved away.

^That sounds even more dragged out than Ten's farewell.:(

Agreed. Tens regeneration into eleven shouldve happened in Journey's End IMO. Dragging it out like they did ruined the effect for me

Oh, no no no, I didn't mean it like that! Ugh, that would be awful. I don't think Thirteen should be moping or whine about it - I'm just saying that it should be a plot point, that it should be addressed properly and not just handwaved away.

I thought they already dealt with it in SJA. Doesn't The Doctor tell Clyde he has 257 lives? ;)

That sounded more like an off-hand remark to shut Clyde up (i.e. a lie, because Rule One :p). After all, it's a rather personal question, don't you think?

The 13 lives thing isn't as important or interesting as many fans believe.

Agreed. It's a pretty small detail of classic Who lore that needlessly cripples the potential longevity DW still can run for. Besides, if we really want to get technical the Doctor has already lived beyond his 13th regeneration according to The Brain of Morbius.

And we already know The Doctor's name from various credits, The War Machines and numerous comments from K9.

    It's Doctor Who.

Agree that The Doctor's name will not be revealed. The episode will be about the secret. Perhaps it will be revealed that his name has a power. So the secret that's revealed is the terrible / epic consequences of revealing his name. Thus, Ten's assertion that there was only one time he could ever tell anyone his name gains significance.

As for hand waving the regeneration limit. No. I wouldn't want it hand waved - although I know that what some will see as hand waving, others will see as a perfectly decent explanation. Whatever they do, it ain't gonna please everyone. The only thing I'd say is that it would be a bit strange to make the will he / won't he regenerate a thirteenth time a dramatic point, since provided the show is still doing well he's definitely going to regenerate. So no drama there. Not sure how I'd milk it otherwise, though. :p

The Doctor's 13 lives is nearly as relevant a bit of info as him being the last of the Timelords... aside from The Master showing up... Timothy Dalton and his choir showing up... Susan/Arkytoir being somewhere on earth... Romana being alive in E-Space...

No, I agree with all of you. I think hand waving it would be a mistake, especially seeing as the thirteen lives limit is ingrained into the heads of fans. However, I don't really know how they would bring that up unless whatever companion the Doctor is traveling with at that time knows that he's a Timelord, that Timelords can regenerate, and that he is on his final life. You could have the Doctor him(or her)self be surprised and pleased, but anything other then that would seem out-of-the-blue unless they bring the limit up on the show during that time.

I don't know about better. I've got the same pair(or as similar as I could get for 11) as both, and I wear the chucks more often because they're more appropriate for casual attire, really. Okay, sure, I like the boots way better but.
