Yeah the HSC was over a year ago :p

I don't know how to describe Go Kan Ryu. Basically a combination of Karta (sp?) and sparring, I guess.

Anyone who does check out a martial art should sure it's authentic, and make sure they have checkable links to the country where the art originates. There are so many fraudulant "masters" out there. People like this are dangerous.

Any instuctor who is credible will have no problem showing you there history etc and who they train with. I personally would learn from any instructor who doesnt train with the masters in the country of origin (Japan in my case) at least 1 month out of each year.

Learning rubbish leaves you worse of than learning nothing at all.

I don't exactly do martial arts. I learn sword work and with that we do a whole bunch of unarmed stuff.
But its ultra spiffy and lots fun. Plus the bruises are worth it

Toms got a good point check out your teachers credentials first to make sure you're not learning rubbish

I dont agree with that in the slightest, it is like saying if you are a chef in French cuisine you must go back to France every year for a month.
My Kung Fu master is the only one in his style in the world (he knows 8 styles and got his status before the Japanese equivalents, who were very upset) and he is originaly from Scotland and based in Australia. Why does he need to go back to Japan when he has already proved himself and there is nobody above him there anyway?

I got my 1st Dan in Taekwondo when I was 16 and have done everything from Muay Thai to Jujitsu since then... Great for self discipline.

I wish I had more time, but work commitments have restricted me of late.

Good luck with your goal Shadow...
I'll be watching out for you at the Olympics.

The best I ever did in TKD competition was a 3rd place in the Open Heavyweight division at the Qld titles.
As a 16yr old at the time, I was very intimidated when I fought a very large, bald-headed man in the semi-finals.
    (You could say I did a number 2) :)

However, now I... am the large bald headed man.(See Qld Forum banner)

Why would you want to keep the ideals of discipline, fair competition and healthy activity from the masses?

TKD is already the most popular martial art in the world today.
Apart from the World Championships, the Olympics is the pinnacle of this combat sport.
Commercialism in the case of TKD is not a particular hindrance in my eyes...
as the sport side of this martial art tends to lend itself to it.

its just the fact that you look in the phone book for Martial Arts and everywhere you see these dodgy European people commercialising the martial art [same with karate] and trying to teach it,,, even thought they are crappy teachers. And when you get European people thinking they are Shaoling Gung Fu sifus and stuff.... that what i hate.... i got no probs with it being widespread
