It obviously used as some sort of rank in the starwars universe but is it a rank in a country today? Is it a foreign word or completely made up?

    Thanks

That's an odd one. All I could find for another meaning is 'A thin silk stuff made in Caucasia'. Google translate doesn't come up with any foreign meaning.

Tarkin was originally called the Grande Mouff Tarkin in Drafts 1-3 of SW, although the role itself was very different (he's some religious leader with one line in Draft 1, in Drafts 2 & 3 he's basically General Dodonna). 'Mouff' doesn't appear to have any meaning.

I'm inclined to think GL made up 'Mouff' (probably pronounced 'Moof') from scratch as a sort of fancy-sounding title, then changed it to the slightly harsher 'Moff' when he gave the name to the villain in Draft 4.

Indeed. And as Tarkin is a Grand Moff, that makes him a big...well, you know.

    Oh, grow up.

We sometimes use the term "map of Tasmania" down here, BTW
