A while back I asked the question, can music be evil, but as many here do not believe in evil, it didn't really work. So here is a new question, does music affect society to any extent have an influence upon you or society in general?

I will be back to post my thoughts.

Well, I'd say that 'pop' music (which includes all 'popular' music, not just boy bands and Britney Spears) is a part of society itself. It's hard to say if music affects society or if society affects music.

For example, the '60s saw a rapid revolution in music with the popularity of rock, which was often characterized by rebellious attitudes. Now, would you say that this 'rebellious' music influenced society, or would you say that the 'rebellious' society influenced the music? In the case of the '60s, I'd say it's a combination of the two. '60s rock was an evolution of the counter-culture movement that first began with the introduction of rock and roll in the '50s. So, in that sense, it developed independently from society. However, the 'rebellious' lyrics incorporated in '60s rock certainly reflected the society of the time.

Today, popular music has no influence on me at all. However, it certainly does have a very significant influence on society in general. And it always has, ever since the '50s or so.

As for me? Well, I'd be glad to go totally against-the-grain and instigate a neo-Classical revolution! :D Anyone wanna join me? :)

Hip Hop music has affected our society to the point where a lot people seem to
want to follow that life style; lots of money, beautiful but shallow women, baggy
clothes and the like. It has also had a serious affect on our society in that now
music, mostly Hip Hop and Rock music, is blamed, among other things, for the
violence among youth in our society. They blame it on the violent and often
offensive lyrics and the way women are being protrayed. Now I don't necessarly
believe this myself but that's up to you to decide.

But music can have a good quality to it, too. Music that expresses one's pain
and obstacles can give a very loud voice to those who go otherwise unnoticed.
It can also bring many people together who feel the same way and feel connected through music. It brings happiness to a lot of people. If you want
proof of this go to a music concert and you'll see a majority of people enjoying
themselves and meeting and embracing other fans. Which pretty much means that a lot music brings unity, which is a good thing.

Personally, I love music of all kinds and it is one of the things that keeps me from
    going insane. :p :)

Music has affected me, personally, more than any other type of artform. I don't know what it is, but there is just something about it, that, when done right, and with the right lyrics, can make my day.

I think that music has a tremendous affect on both. It can influence your thoughts and actions, make you feel better or worse, or alter the way you think.

The reason I brought this up is I recently saw a interview of Winton Marales(sp?) the incredible black trumpet player. That guy's lips are unhuman. Anyways, he was saying that the end of swing music was a bad thing because after that the old and young cecesed to dance with each other. This is important because now the young go off by themselfs and do not learn courtship from the older people. He also said something about how we now have pornography instead of sensuality.

As a musician, music is a part of my life everyday. It has affected me in numerous ways and my life honestly wouldn't be the same without it. I'm talking about playing an instrument, but a well written song can have an even deeper impact on a person. Some songs have become linked with specific memories for me and those songs can make me laugh or cry just hearing the first few notes.

As for society, music can affect it and it can affect music. For example, I wrote a term paper this year on how the Beatles influenced society and culture of the sixties. What I learned was amazing; due to their popularity, the Beatles greatly shaped the society of the sixties. One of the many examples of this being how the Beatles popularized drugs. Drugs had obviously been in use before the 60s, but with the Beatles publically supporting drug use and writing songs praising drugs, drugs quickly gained in popularity and became more mainstream. I'm not saying the Beatles were the only cause of drug use in the 60s, but they were definately one factor in it's rise.

But society can affect music. I think the anti-war songs of the late sixties/early seventies are proof of that. Those songs were specifically written in response to what was happening in society at the time.

Overall, I'd say that music affects everyone and all aspects of society, whether we realize it or not.

Music can do many things, one of its aspect is to inspire, it can inspire us to do many things. It can also change the mood depending on the score, the rhythm or the lyrics. So yes Music can indeed affect society for it affect individuals in either the same way or different way, we can never be sure. Individuals are members of society if there are shift in thoughts or believes or the behavior of these members then thus must society change. However we can not only say that Music change or affect society. What is going on here is a circular effect. Society also change or affect music, this would depends on the culture, belief, religion and law of the society.

And thus we grow or if you wish you could call it a kind of an evolution of the mind and of the souls

Does music effect me and society-- definetly.

Just go through one day thinking about it and you'll realize how much you tie your life into the songs you've heard.
